There have been major changes in the techniques used for hair transplant in the past. A Hair Transplant is done in order to get a natural look of the hair. The combination method of hair transplant is also a new mode of treatment.

FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation):

This is one technique of hair restoration. In this process, a strip of skin is removed from the posterior part of the scalp and then grafts are extracted from it. The grafts are then implanted onto the recipient area. The main aim of this technique is to give a natural look to the patient. This is popularly known as the “Strip Method”.

FUE (Follicular unit extraction) Method:

This is the most widely practiced method nowadays and is propagated by a lot of hair transplant centers as well.  It should be noted that contrary to the popular belief, Follicular Unit Extraction and Follicular Unit Transplantation are similar techniques and FUE can be thought of as a sub category of FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation). This is so because in FUE, the follicular units aren’t obtained in the form of  a strip but are obtained individually instead.

The benefits of this method are that it is suitable for those who want short hair style. It is however not suitable for young people who are at a risk of more balding in the future.

FUT +FUE:

With the rise in Hair Transplantation services across the globe it becomes essential to have an understanding of what the future holds for this field. We now know the process and benefits of both Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) but the latest trend is combining them both to yield the best results.

The reason for the development of this new concept is a realisation that both the methods individually are unable to give as good results as both of them together.

Who can opt for hair transplantation?
Anyone suffering from permanent hair loss can opt for a hair transplantation. Such candidates include the following:

  •       Men with male pattern/ androgenic baldness
  •       Women suffering from hair loss
  •       Those who are willing to restore their hairline.
  •       Those suffering from scarring due to  injuries such as from skin burns, skin diseases, and face lifts.
  •       For those who want to get thicker hair in areas such as their eyebrows or beard, ie, for facial hair transplants.
  •       For those who want to restore old plugs resulting from previous hair transplant surgeries.
  •       For those who want to get their hair transplant redone.

Hair Transplant is hence very useful and has many new techniques developed to provide patients with the best of the results.   Before opting for a hair transplant one should have an idea about the techniques and have an idea about the pros and cons of the technique they choose to opt for.
