Wellness Lifestyle

Introduction

Wellness is the ability to uphold good physical, mental and emotional health.  It is possible for an individual to attain all-round wellness by addressing his or her physical, psychological and emotional needs.  Wellness thus focuses on the adoption of a lifestyle that promotes balance through healthy life practices and attitudes.  Wellness is thus about nutrition, exercise, stress management, personal health choices among much more. The paper below highlights my self-reflection on a personal implementation of a wellness lifestyle.

Discussion

First, I intend to adopt physical exercise as part of my self-management initiative.  The physical exercise will focus mainly on enhancing my cardiovascular activity as well as improve my breathing.  I intend to embrace aerobic activities as part of my exercise routine.  The aerobic activity will take approximately 20 minutes.  Effective aerobic activity coupled with a proper diet helps in weight management.  The exercise also helps strengthen the heart, lower blood pressure, and reduces cholesterol.  I also intend to engage in physical exercises targeting my muscles and boost my strength, Strength training strives to increase metabolism and burn excessive calories in the body.  I also intend to engage in stretching exercise at least three times a week (Teixeira, 2012).   Stretching is a critical activity as it allows the muscles, ligaments and tendons to elongate thus increasing flexibility.  Flexibility and elongation of the body tissue are essential for blood flow and circulation of blood.  I also intend to engage in exercise to strengthen the muscles surrounding my spine, abdomen, and pelvic floor.  Physical exercise is also essential for keeping away health complication in the later future.

Other than exercise, I also intend to adopt a proper nutrition that focuses on a balanced diet.  The human body requires a diet comprising of carbohydrates, vitamin, proteins, minerals and essential fats so as to thrive.  A poor diet will manifest itself as poor health, and the individual is expected to experience a mirage of diseases.  Poor nutrition can also result in generally poor health. For example, a wound that would have otherwise taken a short time to heal, take a long while as they body lacks the capacity to self-recover and heal.  An appropriate diet would eliminate nutritional deficiencies thus leaving the body with the capacity to fight diseases (Ohlhorst, 2013).  A proper diet comprises of the consumption of whole foods, unprocessed foods, a diet filled with fruits and vegetables as well as vitamins, fiber and minerals.  A focus on a diet also means being cautious about portions and cutting back on calories and fats that serve no nutritional purposes.

I would also adopt initiatives aimed at relaxing the mind and acquiring an overall body relaxation.  Mental relaxation is critical as it ensures that the body also rests.  Without mental relaxation, a person is likely to experiences headaches, fatigue and lack of concentration.  Proper rest allow the body to rest and recuperate.  Overworking the mind can be detrimental to overall wellness and can thus affect normal functioning and performance.  Relaxation also ensures muscles rests thus minimizing injury, stress, and confusion. I intend to engage in practices such as yoga and meditation so as to relax the mind and the body as a whole.  Yoga, as well as meditation, ensures that the human mind is centered and balanced (Kushwah, 2016).  It is by achieving a high level of centeredness that an individual experiences optimum health and fitness.  Sleep is another form of relaxation that I would consider.  Whereas most people would love to work for long hours and earn a living, it is essential to get some sleep.  Scientists and healthcare professionals advocate for a minimum of 8 hours of sleep so as to attain optimal body function.

Lack of sleep lowers the body’s efficiency thus affects the immune system.  An individual with poor sleep patterns thus demonstrate poor health and are unwell at most times.  Lack of sleep also leads to weight loss as the individual is constantly burning calories due to being awake for too long.  Yoga, meditation, and sleep also help in stress alleviation as the body can acquire optional rest.  For instance, mediation helps an individual block all external stressors and focus on attaining maximum relaxation and inner peace.  Mediation also helps minimize the occurrence of headaches associated with stress and life pressures.  Mediation also enhances memory and relaxation as it relaxes the brain thus enhancing recollection.

Conclusion

The steps towards improving a person’s fitness, health and well-being involves and adopting an all-around wellness approach.  An effective wellness approach looks at the physical, emotional, and psychological needs of an individual.  Therefore, an individual must engage in exercise, yoga, meditation and observe a proper nutritious diet.  It is critical to address all aspect of health and wellness so as to acquire optimal health.  A healthy life equals to the longevity of life and thus ability to attain set life goals.
