?Anastasia? Musical Story Of A Possible Princess in an Identity Crisis

Posted by John Elia on November 12th, 2018

Anastasia the Musical had its debut performance on Broadway in April 2017. The musical was prominent among the nominees of Best Musical for Drama Desk award.

The musical is an adaptation of the 1997 film of the same name revolving around an orphan girl named Anya who might possibly is the Grand Duchess “Anastasia Nikolaevna” of Russia last alive girl who somehow escaped the execution of the family. She now set on a journey to find her family with two con-artists, looking for personal gains from the girl if she actually is the widely looked for the grand duchess.

Watching “Anastasia” is like experiencing a roller coaster ride. The plot has so many ups and downs, various sets and bewildering acts that you can’t escape its dazzle. The journeys Anya went through during the whole story seem so alive and real that you feel like you are experiencing that yourself.

With music and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, and a book by Terrence McNally this musical was bound to be exceptional. The production is a part of the new national tour all around the 30 U.S. cities including Austin, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Denver, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.

The tour started in Washington D.C and stays in its theaters till 25th of November. Here are the dates and schedule for the tour with venues:

The show is full of hustle and bustle with minimally 30 songs and numbers and numerous set changes showcasing the travels of Anastasia and her company. The show relates to every woman out there looking for their real identity and at the end of the show, you seem to think yourself as a princess too.

The flawless high technology and creative stagecraft highlight the show and prove how “Anastasia” became the joyful ride that it is for so many people.

The show enlightens many emotions within you whilst watching rather than be bewilderment, amazement and even joy. You can’t help starting to feel like a part of the story along the way. The show is known to mesmerize its audience with its variety of plots and such. It may not be one of the top musicals in broadways but a time full of enjoyments and moving emotions is guaranteed.

The show has so many memorable moments like the train ride to Paris. The whole ride is extremely nerve-wracking and hazardous topping it with the music especially Romanov numbers of yore tracing the memories and so yearning like the “Gone with the Wind”.

Other songs consist of booming vocals specifically the song sung by Coogan and her love interest Dmitri.  On the other hand, some songs are awfully high-pitched as if searching for a whole new gravity.

In my opinion, Ahrens and Flaherty were way better delivering a probably enjoyable piece particularly in “Tiny Dancer” which had its first appearance at the Kennedy Center with McNally as a rather peculiar choice for the development.

But ultimately you can’t stop yourself from submitting.

In the end, you see how a little girl and her sister sit with one of them shutting down her ears as the commissioner holds the gun at Anastasia’s head. Both of them in a state of a daze as Anya could be the one to become Anastasia.
