 Introduction

Emotional intelligence is perceived as an important and desirable quality in leadership.  It guides Intra, and interpersonal behavior gives rise to what and how emotions are appropriately expressed in an organization.  Emotional intelligence necessitates abstract reasoning combined with emotions that convey discernable and regular meanings. Individuals vary in their degree of emotional intelligence in their ability to understand their emotions, process cues of an emotional nature and relate emotional processing to a wider cognition. Emotional intelligence is seen to manifest itself in certain adaptive behaviors. A self-assessment is one way that individuals evaluate their emotional intelligence based on four elements. The four elements of emotional intelligence are self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness and relationship management. The following session discusses emotional intelligence based on self-assessment score conducted through responding to 20 questionnaire questions.

Self-awareness

I scored highest in self-awareness. Self-awareness involves understanding emotions, strengths, and weaknesses as an individual and as a leader. I developed self-awareness by understanding personal feelings and the cause of different feelings. By understanding emotions, it is possible to identify and understand certain emotions and manage how to respond to different environments. An individual high on this characteristic knows when they become angry, recognize what senses are used in different situations and identify when they experience mood shifts.  A score of 24 is a high score in self-awareness. Before anyone can make changes in self-awareness levels, it is essential to recognize what emotions individual experiences, understand the feeling associated with the particular emotion and understand the consequent actions as influenced by the emotions.

Emotions can change from one moment to the next. It is also common to experience a range of emotions at any one time.  However, there are certain mental blocks that influence individuals to be less interested in recognizing their emotions.  Often, denial about certain emotions like fear, anger is uncommon as they may be viewed as a weakness. However, recognizing such emotions is important in understanding how they influence interactions and other people’s emotional state. A leader should assess and note their emotions and behavior to help them become aware of any patterns in of emotions in different interactions. It is critical leaders to possess high levels of emotional self-awareness. In other words, effective leaders need an acute understanding of how feelings can affect their behavior, mood, and performance. This way, they can remain cognizant of how their emotion affects the mood and performance of others.

Self-management

The self-management section was the poorest scored with a score of 16 points. Self-management involves using the understanding of own emotions to manage them so as to motivate oneself in all situations and generate positive interactions with others. The ability to acknowledge negative emotions is an important step to control of them and avoid a spillover effect. Self-management is important for leaders as individuals prefer interacting with those in control of themselves and whose reactions do not depend on their prevailing emotions. From the score, I will need to improve my score on self-management.

Improvement will involve an honest appraisal of own behavior. Once a negative form of reaction or response is identified, positive measures will be taken to control or eliminate it. I find it difficult to relax when under pressure in situations. I am also unduly influenced by the attitudes and moods of the people around me. I am aware of several instances where I have been influenced by a team member.

I will need to make a conscious effort to insulate myself and stay calm when I am a target of anger from others. Being aware that certain situations have an influence on my own emotions is a key step. Recognizing my weakness will also help in minimizing any negative impact on emotions by appreciating why their emotions affect mines in the way they do. Self-management does not mean that I will never experience negative emotions; rather, the key is to have control over emotions and resulting response so that it can be channeled in an appropriate manner. Developing skills in this area will necessitate learning how to effectively manage emotions. With practice, I will strengthen my abilities in this particular component of self-management.

Social Awareness

Social awareness focuses level of empathy.  I scored 23 points in this element of emotional intelligence.  Social awareness involves the ability to fine-tune responses based on the understanding of the other party’s emotions.  Individuals with high levels of social awareness are able to accurately perceive, identify with and appraise others' emotions as well as build supportive networks. Leaders require social awareness element as they need to be more interpersonally sensitive, warm, and understanding, less critical and more likely to be supportive.  Empathy involves recognizing other people’s emotions by being aware of their perspectives.  This involves clearly identifying and thinking about other individual's viewpoints.

Relationship management

Relationship Management involves the identification and management of relationships with individuals inside and outside of the team.  The score in this session indicates a high level of relationship management.
