How does using borrowed theory support the development of nursing theory? Nursing theories are essential in guiding the mode of practice. The different types of theories used in the nursing field do not all have a basis in nursing, but from medicine, pharmacy, social sciences, behavioral sciences, and learning theories among others. The different theories from other disciplines are referred to as borrowed. The borrowed theories are crucial in the discipline of nursing by their contribution to the development of nursing theories. The Essay provides a discussion of the theories used in nursing but from other disciples and their support in the development of nursing theory. Nurses in all the health care settings have an obligation to care for different types of patients, hence apply concepts and principles from other disciplines (McEwen & Wills, 2010). The common disciplines in use include social sciences, behavioral sciences, and the learning theories. Social sciences are diverse and have adequate sources of information. The premise makes them have theory perspectives that are relevant to nursing and have an impact on the wellness and health of the individuals. The information acquired from the social sciences is helpful both to the patients and the professional healthcare nurses. The behavioral sciences tend to explain individual behavior in relation to the development of self. Behavioral sciences have different theories that explain human behavior in different concepts but none explain the human behavior complexity. The use of the different theories in the nursing profession helps to relay important information about human behavior. The likelihood of having a healthy and creative growth is a dynamic process in entire lifespan (Parker & Smith, 2010). As such, behavioral sciences provide crucial data for the understanding of the phases of development and apply the stages in the practice settings related to patient care. The effective use of the learning theories in conjunction with the nursing theory provides guidance to the nurses on how to interact with the patients. The learning theories help to understand how an individual perceives information and changes in the performance of certain tasks. The application of a good learning theory allows confident and consistent decision making on the learning environment and other choices to make. Nursing theories offer a framework for the assessment of patient needs and the language to be used by the nurses in charting. On the other hand, learning theories assists to offer the effective ways of assimilating and presenting the information as well as the intended interventions (McEwen & Wills, 2010). In light of the information acquired from the different borrowed theories, nursing professionals can apply it in supporting the development of nursing theory. The information obtained from the behavioral sciences helps in forming a basis for designing a nursing theory that caters for human behavior in the response to the provision of care. The social sciences help to develop a nursing theory that has a regard to the well being and health of individuals in health care. The theories in social sciences influences the development of nursing theory since they deal with the human interactions and their environment. As identified, learning theories have a great impact on the development of nursing theory due to the contribution of explaining how to relay the health information to the patient. Borrowed theories have a significant contribution to the nursing disciple and their impact cannot be underestimated.
