5 Fantastic Uses for Your Garage in Winter

Now that the nights are longer and the weather much colder, you have probably tidied your barbeque, garden furniture and gardening equipment into the garage for the winter. However as long as your garage roof is in good condition it can still be an extremely useful extra ‘room’ at this time of year. Here are some ideas for you to think about:

  1. It is always difficult getting laundry dried at this time of year. You may like the idea and convenience of a tumble drier but not have the space for one in your house. Why not install one in the garage instead? It can easily be vented outside.
  1. Some small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs) are fine in outside hutches over the winter as long as they have enough straw and are in a sheltered position. However others seem to do better in the extra shelter provided by a wind and water tight garage. It is also a much warmer and brighter environment for children to look after and interact with family pets. Cleaning out bedding, whilst protected from the wind and rain is an added bonus to this arrangement.
  1. The garage is a great place to store spring bulbs as long as it is dry and cool. Brush off any excess dirt and put the bulbs in labelled paper bags or nets to help with identification when you come to plant them. Spring bulbs usually need to be stored for at least 6-8 weeks in the cold in order to bloom successfully.
  1. Snow, snowmen and sledging are great fun at this time of year. But with snow comes wet boots. A great time for the kids but not such a great treat for your carpets. A garage is an ideal place to store wet or muddy boots until they have tried off and can be cleaned properly.
  1. Put your car in the garage at night!! Most people do not do this for one of two reasons:
  • The inconvenience of having to get in and out the car to open and shut the garage
  • The space in the garage is not sufficient for the size of car.

However if you can fit your car in the garage, you will save considerable time on frosty mornings, by not having to defrost it. It will also protect your car from the worst of the winter weather and is also much less likely to be stolen than if left in the driveway.

A garage can be an extremely useful addition to any home as long as it is watertight. If your garage roof is damaged or needs replaced it is worth finding a good garage roofing company who can repair or replace it before the harsh winter weather sets in.
