Dental Hygiene

Keeping the mouth, teeth and gums clean and healthy to prevent disease is key to good oral health. While your general dentist is qualified to provide all dental hygiene services, at East Bentleigh dental we believe dental hygienists and oral health therapists are even better equipped to do so because of their specific training and greater experience in this particular field. Apart from scale and clean treatment, dental hygienists are qualified to provide fissure sealants and fillings (for clients up to 25 years of age) to treat gum disease and importantly, to show you how to best care for your own teeth and gums at home.

Most of our patients love visiting their hygienist. Perhaps it’s the fresh breath feeling after a scale and clean, or being proactive in preventing dental problems later in life. Or it could simply be that our hygienists are so friendly and go out of their way to ensure every patient’s total comfort.

The benefits of a scale and clean

  • There’s a lot to like about a scale and clean – that feeling of invigoration, fresher breath and the removal of staining and calculus.
  • Any build-up of calculus, or plaque, can cause health problems if not removed. Bacteria living in the plaque release acids that can weaken tooth enamel and increase the risk of tooth decay.

Routine professional cleaning, in conjunction with a full checkup, is the solution to maintain the health of your teeth and gums and thus avoid dental emergencies. This treatment is always more effective when not left too long; every six months tends to be ideal. We ask you to please allow an hour for your next scale and clean appointment.
