“Elf The Musical” is the musical version of a movie Filmed in 2003 with the name “Elf”. Starring “Will Ferrell” as “Buddy” the show follows the storyline from the movie. Buddy is a human child who mysteriously was found in the North Pole after being raised by the elves of Santa for years, he finds out the truth and starts a journey to find his family. He later gets to know that his father is the popular and contemptuous administrative Walter Hobbs.
The musical first came to Broadway in November 2010 a story by Bob Martin who wrote the book and adapted by Thomas Meehan. Chad Beguelin has given his lyrics to the music of Mathew Sklar for the musical. Then in 2012 the “Elf the Musical” started its first national tour.
The success of the musical for so many years now marks the efficient direction of Donna Drake, Musical Direction by Brian Cimmet and musical choreography by Brian J. Marcum. Donna Drake will be returning to Syracuse Stage after the successful presentation of “The Wizard of the Oz” last season.
“I’m so happy to be back at Syracuse Stage,” Drake said. “I feel like I left a little piece of my heart here last year.”
She also sad that her job this year is a lot easier with “Elf the Musical” being written with “such heart, such warmth and such hilarity.” She put enormously emphasized how magnificent the musical will be for children and urged parents to bring them for the show. However, due to mild language and sarcasm, the musical is like move rated PG.
This year’s production is going to be like returning home for the choreographer Marcum as he was also involved with the original Broadway edition and helped its workshop development in 2009. He was responsible to develop a dance routine that goes well with the looks and the feel of the performers. It is clearly evident in the work that he has been with the musical for a long time now.
Although he has done it a lot of time, Marcum is focused to create a new air to the dance.
“This will be a fully Donna Drake version of the musical,” he said. “The idea is to pay homage to the Broadway choreography not to replicate it. That’s more fun.”
This year’s “Elf The Musical” edition will mark the 18th alliance of Syracuse Stage with Syracuse University Department of Drama. This show highlights the importance of and Syracuse University Department of Drama’s 46 years of partnership for the students, theater and community.
