Australia is a country of endless celebrations! Right after the New Year party is called off, comes in the rave of Australia Day, the national day celebration which is all about barbie, beaches and everything summer.
Australia Day is celebrated to mark the beginning of colonisation in the country; the day symbolic of either survival or invasion but nevertheless a day of live music, sporting events, Sydney Harbour cruises, citizenship ceremonies and pool parties in Australia.
A hundred events are hosted around the country, some events definitely a-must-do. Here are some ‘Aussie’ favourites for you!
Birthday in the Capital
Regatta Point is your venue for the day, the sphere filled with beer fizz, live soundtracks and smell of delicious treats! If you’re there with your kids, drop them at Patrick White Lawns where there are plenty of entertainment options open for them. They can team up for a game of cricket, slip down the giant slide, bounce their way in the jumping castle or face paint their favourite fairytale character. Surprise your inner foodie at the many local food trucks and dance to the best music of famous local DJs. To end your day comes the visual extravaganza at 9pm, the pyrotechnic display and the colourful display of fireworks!
Australia Day on Bribie Island
How about a party in the smallest island of Moreton Bay? Join other party goers at the Brennan Park of Bribie Island. Hit the golden sands and have a fun time with beach-themed activities, take part in a game of beach volleyball or swim in the crystal-clear waters off the Bongaree waterfront! The island also hosts a huge array of live performers, music bands and other gigs. Your kids will also have so much fun with the various lamington and icecream eating competitions held throughout the day. Foregather for BBQs & beers and sunbathe on the shores while tuned into the Triple J Hottest 100 countdown (the top 100 soundtracks of the year based on the annual music listener poll) and finish the celebrations with a brilliant fireworks display from 8pm.
Australia Day at Sydney Harbour
The harbour city is never out of festivities. For Australia Day too, the city is packed with events all day, especially at the harbour. The celebrations begin with Ferrython, an event in which dressed and decorated ferries race from Shark Island to the finish line under the Harbour Bridge. Following which is the obeisance to the country with 21-gun salute & flyover by Royal Air Force Australia. Get treated to a display of yachts and tug boats moving in unison to a musical score and the parade of brightly decorated ships & vessels. Cheer the tall ship sailors as they race to the finish under the Harbour Bridge. Enjoy one of the oldest regattas in the world as over 100 boats race to the finish line. The events culminate with Hornets and Qantas flying over the Harbour Bridge and a colourful Red Berets’ parachute display. Sydney Harbour lunch cruises become the most popular vantage point for the day with unparalleled views and fun events to make the day even brighter!
The street will be overtaken by the Live At The Quay celebration, including interviews with the Australians of the Year, the inaugural Sydney Cove Cup race, sunset ceremony featuring Koomurri dancers and special performance by famous musicians and live bands. Putting a perfect end to day are the 9pm fireworks, setting the sky ablaze with a 15-minute demonstration of pyrotechnics, light installations, music and jet ski and flyboard prowess.
Adding to these are the Australia Day Parade and the fireworks at Dockland in Melbourne, Elder Park celebrations in Adelaide and much more! So why wait..go check’ em out! Also See: Sydney Harbour, Harbour Bridge, Harbour Lunch, Finish Line, Harbour, Australia, Events
