Which Solar Panel technology is the Best for India?

If you are reading this article, it means you have already decided to “go solar”. It is definitely a laudable decision because as the technology is maturing its prices are declining and efficiencies are improving. When you make up your mind to buy a solar panel, you will encounter two choices primarily - mono or polycrystalline. The third type is thin film technology.

As a layman it becomes difficult to understand the difference between these two technologies. So let’s have a brief understanding about the two:-

1). Monocrystalline Solar Panel Technology: - During polysilicon manufacturing, it is possible to grow pure silicon made of a single crystal. The solar panels made out of this single crystal of pure silicon is called monocrystalline solar panel. They are made out of the highest-grade silicon. Since they are made out of the highest-grade silicon, the efficiency of monocrystalline solar cells is high and range in between 18% to 24%. These are black in colour and have a uniform look. Mono solar panels price in India is generally higher when compared to multicrystalline solar panels.

2). Multicrystalline Solar Panel Technology: - Multicrystalline solar panel technology is the more prevalent technology in the world. These solar panels are made out of polycrystalline silicon which can be as much as 99.9999% pure. These panels have an efficiency of between 13%-17%. Multicrystalline solar cells have lower efficiency and costs than monocrystalline solar cells. But that is changing over time and today few brands of multicrystalline solar panels are offering efficiency levels of 20%+. These are blue in colour but not very uniform in appearance.
