The factors contributing to the growth of the insect repellent market include the rising incidence of mosquito-borne diseases, increased awareness and government initiatives for mosquito control. In May 2010, the Chinese government launched a national malaria elimination program with the goal of eliminating malaria from the country by 2015. In some border areas of Yunnan province, the goal is to eliminate malaria by 2017. As a result of these programs, the mortality has significantly dropped in China. According to the WHO, in 2010, there were approximately 5,000 cases of malaria and 100 deaths reported. These incidences have been reduced to just 10 in 2016 and no fatalities due to malaria registered in 2016.

Mosquito-borne diseases are most prevalent in the Asian and Sub-Saharan regions, whereas tick-borne diseases such as Lyme and are more common in the North American and European regions. Malaria is one of the most prevalent diseases due to mosquitos, and it has a considerable reach to the Asia-Pacific region, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. According to the WHO’s 2017 WorldMalaria Report, approximately 216 million global cases of malaria were reported in 2016. Nearly 90% of these cases were observed in the African region, followed by the Southeast Asia region at 7%. Due to increases in healthcare facilities, diagnosis, treatment and awareness of the disease, the global incidence rate has decreased by 18% from 76 per 1,000 inhabitants to 63 per 1,000 inhabitants. Approximately 445,000 global mortalities due to malaria were reported compared to 446,000 in 2015. The African region accounted for 91% of the total global mortalities.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the prevalence of Lyme disease in the U.S. among men was 8.1 people per 100,000 in 2016. Lyme disease, which was previously restricted to the eastern parts of the country, is now spreading to other regions. Many global regions have witnessed an upsurge in cases of the Zika virus. According to the WHO, approximately 70 countries have reported incidences of the Zika virus since 2007, and of that 53 first reported an outbreak since 2015. In 2015, the Zika virus caused a widespread epidemic in Brazil and then spread to other parts of South and North America, as well as to several islands in the Pacific and Southeast Asia. Globally, more than 200,000 cases of Zika were observed in 2015.
