Questions from a criminal justice story

1. Who are the main characters? Where does the story take place?

The main characters in the story are Connie, her mother, her sister June, their father, Eddie, Arnold Friend, Ellie Oscar. The story takes place around Connie’s life and specifically her encounters at home and at a movie scene where she met strange boys who trailed on her later.

2. What is the story about? How does it end?

The story is about a young girl, Connie, nearing adulthood and who sneaks around to restaurants to meet boys and not for movies. She is rebellious and had a poor relationship with her mother. She met Arnold Friend who lets her know that he is after her. On a particular Sunday, Arnold goes to Connie’s home to take her out and threatens her if she failed to cooperate. The story ends with Connie giving in to him and it is likely that she would never go back.

3. What did you like about the story? What did you dislike?

I like the story for the way the narrator maintains a level of suspense from the beginning to ensure that the reader is interested to follow to the end. The flow of ideas is good and the level of creativity is high. I did not dislike the way the author portrays the position of women in the society as people who cannot resist much on the advances from men.

4. Please summarize the true case that this story is loosely based on?

I believe that the case of the story is loosely based on the struggle of women to deal with violence from men who are perceived to have autonomy over them.

5. What is the relevance of this story to criminal justice?

The story is relevant to criminal justice regarding the threats of harm and fear instilled to Connie by Friend. It is a criminal offense to threaten other people for no grounds and with the intention of causing harm. Connie deserved justice of protection by the system against such threats.
