Larry Page

Larry Page is the co-founder of Google. He is an American entrepreneur and a computer scientist who together with Sergey Brin co-founded the Google Inc. Larry Page was born to Gloria and Carl Page in Michigan, and both of his parents were computer science professors. His childhood home was full of computers and science magazines as a result of this; it helped to increase his fascination for technology when at an early age. Larry Page also had an interest in business and innovation and when at 12 years, he realized that he wanted to start a company (Lowe, 2009). Page graduated from East Lansing High School in 1991 and then pursued a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering at the University of Michigan. He later finished his Master of Science in Computer Science from Stanford University. Page later met Sergey Brin, and the two shared a visionary that involved numbers and the nature of backlinks and how they would be of value to the information on a page (Lowe, 2009).

In 1996, they built a search engine called Backrub and was operated on Stanford servers for some months. Andy Bechtolsheim decided to finance their company and wrote a check for 0,000 to the entity, and in September 1998, the project was named Google. Page appointed himself as the CEO and Brin were the co-founders and the company’s president. Google was started in 1998 by both Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and it is a subsidiary of the holding company Alphabet Inc. Google headquarters is located in Mountain View, California (Hall & Hosch 2015). The company started as an online search organization, but it now provides more than fifty internet products and services from online documents creation and e-mails to software for tablet computers and mobile phones. The company’s product portfolio and also the size do make it be one of the top four influential companies in the high-tech marketplace. Its original search tool tends to be the core of its success.

The co-founders raised one million dollars from friends, investors, and family and set up a shop in Menlo Park named Google. Leader’s philosophy

As a leader, Larry has been able to design the management structure of Google successfully. Larry empowers his employees and also uses situational approach to motivation and has a high degree of patience. Page does claim that the adoption of technology is much faster and the smartphones show that. Page does want technology to do the hard work, and people need to be able to use technology and not being used by technology. Page tends to use a different philosophy in his leadership. He uses an approach that does not focus on competition, but on transforming products and services (Elmer, 2011). Page always claims that it is not important to focus on competition. According to Page, focusing on competition tend to create problems. He believes that it is not possible to get amazing work or to have an excited workforce when you are working to be other companies that do the same thing. According to Page, focusing on the competitors tend to create companies that will end up decaying with time as just opposing to one that creates new and interesting things. Page has a work philosophy that goes like, “We should build great things that do not exist.” His thinking tends to propel the company to take radical-seeming projects that push boundaries of the current norm (Elmer, 2011). Because of his philosophy, he can push employees to their best and set their expectations. Page is a leader who is inspirational to his employees and because of this; the company is seen as a great success and innovative.

When looking at Page’s leadership, it is clear that he values the contribution of employees a lot. According to Beer & Finnström (2009), sense of empathy and positivity towards employees and the team members normally help the leaders in developing the correct people skill for effective connection with them. Page tends to show empathetic nature towards the needs of employees because he believes that treating your employees like the family members helps in increasing their productivity. The adoption of open communication at Google has helped the leader in successfully determining problems of employees and then formulating the necessary solutions.

Larry Page has great leadership skills and using his skills he has been able to manage diversity at Google. Page is an introvert, and because of this, he is likely to listen and include the creative ideas of others (Elmer, 2011). The introvert nature of Page makes him more reflective, deep thinker, and also more employee-friendly and approachable. His introvert nature is an added advantage, especially for employees. As he is a good listener, Page is usually able to identify any problems that employees may have and also provide his employees with an opportunity of communicating and interacting freely with one another. With his leadership aspect, the diverse employees normally feel that they are equal and their efforts are appreciated at all time (Beer & Finnström 2009). At Google, the leader believes that so as to create and sustain an effective organizational culture, all those involved should share the same desires to create, build, learn, have fun, and take risks. Page’s philosophy of empowering and also facilitating the work of employees has led to several innovations and the explosive growth of the company. Larry Page is an excellent leader who has taken several measures so as to ensure that he can provide what is best for Google and his employees.
