Yoga Kundalini Upanishad

Introduction

Upanishads are more than hundred in number. Of them, twenty are yoga upanishads. Yoga Kundalini Upanishad is one of the Yoga Upanishads. It forms part of Sama Veda. It is the nintieth Upanishad of Muktika Upanishad Order as enumerated by Lord Sri Rama to Lord Sri Hanuman. It is a great reference for yoga lovers whether they are adepts teaching yoga or students learning.

Yoga Kundalini Upanishad contains 171 verses in three chapters.

Kundalini Awakening

The first chapter deals with Kundalini Awakening. It contains 87 verses. The detailed accounts of Asana, Pranayama, Bandhas and Samadhi are given.

Controling of Prana is possible only by employing temprance in food, proper posture and Kundalini awakening.

Temperance of food is leaving off the quarter of food taken for eating.

Two types of postures are mentioned. One is Padmasana and the other one is Vajrasana.

Kundalini Awakening involves two steps. One is rousing the Sarasvati Nadi simply known as Sarasvati Chalana. The second step is holding up the Prana or simply Pranayama.

Sarasvati Chalana

The rousing of Sarasvati Nadi is done by employing Mula-Bandha (perineal lock), Uddiyana Bandha (Abdominal lock) and Jalandhara Bandha (Throat lock). The detailed account of getting mastery over rousing the Sarasvati nadi is given.

Pranayama

Four types of Pranayama and the steps involved in the practice are given in detail.

  1. Surya Bheda
  2. Ujjayi
  3. Sitali
  4. Bastrika

Pranayama should always be practised along with three locks. The steps involved in practicing the locks are also detailed.

The number of Pranayama should be practiced at different phases of practice are prescribed.

The seven obstacles of yoga practice are enumerated.

As a final step, the Kundalini awakening is explained in a step by step manner.

Khechari Vidya

The second one dipicts the scicence of Khechari Vidya. It contains 49 verses. There is a detailed account of philosophy, practice, and performance of Khechari Mudra and Khechari Mantra Sadhana.

The importance and benefits of Khechari Vidya is first explained. Khechari Vidya Involves Khechari Mudra, Khecahri Mantra and Philosophy.

Khechari Mudra is turning the tongue backwards and inserting it upwards beyond Uvula combining with fixing eye sight between the eyebrows. Its performance cannot be mastered overnight. It involves the patient practice of various steps in different phases. A complete account of getting mastery over the practice is given.

Normally the tongue won't go beyond Uvula. For getting this done, the frenulum of the tongue should be cut off in the manner prescribed.

Khechari Mantra Sadhana is chanting of Khechari Mantra as initiated by Guru. The mantra is "Hreem, Bham, Sam, Pam, Pham, Sam and Khsam" which should be practiced for 500 thousand times each day for a period of twelve days. If done perfectly, the mastery is attained.

The initiation from a Guru is must for starting Khechari Vidya and it should not resorted without the guidance of a competent Guru who has already mastered the techniques.

Jivan Mukti and Videha Mukti

The third chapter talks about Jivan-Mukti and Videha-Mukti. Jivan Mukti is liberation attained during one's life time. Videha Mukti is the liberation attained after leaving this world.
