Posted by Peter Douglas on December 27th, 2018

In some parts of the world, setting up a bait is acceptable. In other parts, using a bait is frowned upon. It is a sensitive issue for many but, it definitely has its share of pros. It makes the job much easier as you do not have to wait for a long time or search for the deer by looking for trails. The best part is that it works almost every time! In this article, we will talk about some of the best bait to attract deer.

Target your bait

You will need to tailor the bait according to the species that you are targeting. It is uncommon to attract multiple species using the same site. This is because once the hog or the predator spreads their scent all over the bait site, it unlikely that the deer would frequent that area. Oat brans is one of the best bait to attract deer.

Steak out your feeders

If there are hogs or bears in the area that you live in, make sure to secure the bait sites with extra measures. This means that you have to stake down the feeder as strongly as possible. You could also reinforce the fences. The problem is not that the hogs would knock ove the feeder. But, they dig underneath it, which causes the theatre to collapse under the weight.

Monitoring equipment

In order to maximize the efforts being put in, use some sort of a monitoring device. This would help you to understand how many animals come in the area as well as the assessing the quality of those animals.

You could go old school and use the best bait to attract deer. All you have to do is rake and smoothen the area around the bait site. Later on, you could do a track survey to count how many animals came to the area. You could also go for a high-tech camera and set it up in a tree. This way, you would be able to keep an eye on the area from the comfort of your home.

Hunt the trails

If you want to hunt a mature buck then you could follow the trails that the deer have made to and from the feeder. The chances of you killing the buck while in the bait site is very less, instead you should back up a few hundred yards away from it and look for a hunting area that directly leads to the bait site.
