Teen is Dependent on Alcohol: Causes Of Alcohol Addiction in Adolescents

Posted by Sanya Kaushal on December 28th, 2018

Alcohol addiction loves fragile individuals. The teenage years are those in which we are most vulnerable and always seeking thrill. Alcohol commonly plays a role in teen’s idea of a good time. What may feel good at the moment can have detrimental effects on one’s future. One beer has the potential to lead teens down a downward slope towards alcohol dependence. Researchers have reported that 10-15 percent of people who are exposed to alcohol will likely develop alcohol-related problems.

Addiction has a way of messing with one’s brain. Literally. There is a signaling mechanism in the brain that turns off one’s motivational control. The profile of addiction is pretty clear. One knows the negative consequences of excessive alcohol consumption and knows of other rewards available, yet still feels highly motivated to pursue the addictive substance. Teens especially have no immunity to self-control. There are many things that can spark addiction in teens. It varies based on the individual. Regardless, it is important to educate yourself on the causes of addiction in today’s youth population.

Reasons for Declaring Dependence

There are endless ways in which a teen can develop a dependence on alcohol. Here are some possible causes for their addictive behaviors towards alcohol:

  • Family history of substance abuse
  • Little to no supervision leaving a teen feeling uncared for and reckless
  • Uneducated on the long-term effects of alcohol abuse
  • Family conflicts
  • Thrill-seeking and desire to engage in risky behaviors
  • Way of coping after a tragic event
  • Emotional instability
  • Peer pressure
  • Media glamorization

These are all things that can sit at the root of a teen’s inability to put down the bottle. The best way to combat these risks is through communication, care, and support. The teenage years can be confusing and sometimes very rocky. Teens should know they have people who love and care about them. In fact, your teen may not act like it, but they need you. Your love and nurturing are vital to their teenage survival. Keep the communication open. Talk to them about alcohol. Avoiding the subject won’t make it disappear. They should know about the risk factors. Encourage and help them create a healthy environment with good friends and healthy alternatives to drinking. The best start at a healthy future begins at home.
