Milk is now more of a tasty commodity than essential one. It comes in plenty of varieties from toned milk, double toned milk, full cream, lactose free, flavoured milk, rBST free, raw milk, unprocessed organic milk and so many more. Consumers have a lot to choose from based on their taste and nutritional needs. This is great as in some or the other form, you are taking in this essential ingredient packed with nutrients!

Milk certainly has nutrients and energy that no other food can provide. Drinking one cup of milk every day is as essential as drinking water.

Milk in its original form as well as other forms like curd, paneer, cheese and others is healthy and tasty. A lot of adults are now deficient in Vit D because of lifestyle and other changes.

Deficiency of calcium is causing low immunity and joint problems and other bone related issues. The milk we drink has to be pure and unadulterated to get the benefits of drinking it.

This is more dangerous in case of infants and toddlers, who are mostly dependent on milk as their primary diet apart from mothers feed. Even lactating mothers need lot of milk to keep themselves healthy and strong.

There is no way one can get the nutrients with milk that is not pure. In fact, your health will only deteriorate if impure milk is consumed for a long time. That’s why, it is important to know the right way to choose your milk.

A general misconception is that if the milk is labelled as ‘organic’, it will be pure. That’s not necessarily true. The process of taking the milk is what makes it pure and organic. It's not always the final product. There are small yet significant differences in the fatty acid profiles of organic and regular whole milk. In terms of nutrition, there are no scientifically proven differences in organic and ‘rBST-free’ milk.

Let us understand the process of getting organic milk to appreciate the importance of it. Organic milk is produced by cows which are fed with organic feed that means no poultry or animal by-products and have access to pasture all through the grazing season. Simply put, cows that eat only grass and hay produce pure organic milk. These cows are also not injected with antibiotics and artificial hormones to achieve more efficiency. This milk has all the necessary and healthy ingredients including proteins and omega-3 fatty acids that are essential for growth and strong bones.

Even with conventionally produced milk, the safety checks need to be followed before they can be released for the consumer. These are tested for antibiotic content or presence of pesticides and must adhere to high safety standards failing which their license can be cancelled.

Organic and conventionally produced milk both are great choices based on individual needs and preferences – mostly related to taste. Both are good sources of energy, protein, calcium and many other vitamins and minerals.
