Metallic hot stamping foils – Introduction

Metallic hot stamping foils are utilized in hot foil stamp printing. The hot foil stamp printing is a process of printing pigmented, hologram or metallic foil on solid surfaces ranging from plastic, light paper, laminated board, carton board and corrugated boards by applying heat and pressure. This heat and pressure is applied with the help of specialized equipment called hot foil stamp printing machine which consists of the metal printing die in the form of loose letters.

These letters when hot are stamped onto the solid surface. These machines come in many types like rotary, platen, clam-shell and roll-on. Thus, metallic hot stamping foils serves the purpose of ink or paint, as they are coated with layer of color ready to be transferred to another surface.  Metallic hot stamping foils are made up of three functional layers.

The first layer is clear which acts as the carrier upon which the ink or pigment is laid. This film does not get transferred to the surface. The second is the main layer of pigmented sediments on which the actual colors can be seen. The third layer contains the releasing coating. Pigment foil, effects foil, holographic foil, scratch-off foil and signature panel foil are among the most popular foils.

One of the many advantages that metallic hot stamping foils provide is that they give the most reflective finish of all coating processes. Also, the process of hot foil stamp printing using metallic foil is versatile and can be used on different substrates and materials. This heat and pressure applied in this process also simultaneously irons out any roughness or unevenness in the surface of the material or substrate.
