An Introduction to the UNF Thread Gauges

Posted by gaugestools15 on January 11th, 2019

Thread gauges are small GO/NO GO gauges that are used to test tools for manufacture. There are many types of thread gauges and all of these are used for and on different tools, depending on their specifications. One such thread gauge is the UNF thread gauge.

The UNF in UNF thread gauges stands for Unified National Fine Thread Gauges. The thread of the gauge is at a sixty-degree angle. The fine thread of this gauge is useful mainly for the production of screws, nuts and bolts since these are small tools that require incredible precision to test. The threads of this kind of gauge have larger tensile strength than most regular gauges. UNC thread gauges or Unified National Coarse is the most popular thread gauge in the industry and is preferred over most other gauges. It has a thicker and deeper cable that is easy to assemble and use, however, it cannot be used for tools that require a slimmer and more delicate threading. This is where the Unified National Fine thread gauge comes into work. It fits snugly inside most smaller tools and the sixty-degree angle of the thread allows for finer adjustments as required by the tool. It also has a high breaking load capacity since it doesn’t have as much thread depth as most other gauges but has more tensile stress area instead.

There are a few specifications that need to be looked into before buying a thread gauge to ensure that the thread gauge that is bought is the best fit for you. One of the most important ones is the thread fit. In Thread Gauges, there is usually a male and a female thread that work together. These male and female threads have specific combinations that make up the thread fit of the gauge.

Advantages of the Unified Thread Gauge:

Like mentioned before, although coarser threads are more popular, there are some things that only fine threads can do and hence there are certain advantages to using finer threads. Some of these advantages are:

Tensile Strength- Finer thread gauges have higher tensile strength as compared to the Unified National Coarse thread gauges because of the increased area of the tensile stress.

Thread Length- In thin walls, the shorter length of the thread present in the Unified National Fine thread gauge allows threading.

Precision- Due to the helix angle being smaller in the Unified National Fine thread gauge, the fine thread allows for a more precise adjustment.

Strength- Due to the high tensile strength of Unified Nation Fine thread gauge, the strength offered in smaller wire areas is a lot more than many other thread gauges, including the Unified National Coarse thread gauges.

Ease of use- Unified National Fine thread gauges are easy to use because of their simple design and because of the finer wire they are easier to tap into thicker and harder material than what other thread gauges are normally used for.
