The biometric device helps the organization to track the attendance of their employee systematically. It makes use of biometric of each employee in order to keep the record of their in and out time during the working hours. Biometric is a security mechanism used for providing access to an individual based on fingerprint recognition which is pre-stored in a biometric security system. Biometric systems are deployed in the workforce is to eliminate time theft. Following are some of the Pros and Cons of Biometric system.

Pros of Biometric system:

  • Biometric Identification is the most accurate system to identify any employee. Biometric credentials are unique for every individual and cannot be duplicated. It helps in tracking the employee time and prevents time theft issues such as early arrivals, early departures, and unauthorized overtime.

  • Biometric Attendance system increases the accuracy of payroll during the pay period. Calculating attendance manually for every employee is a time taking task. By using biometric attendance system it automatically calculates without any error and data cannot be manipulated.

  • Biometrics provide accurate time and attendance record to the payroll system as it saves employee working time and decreases overhead. So that it can effectively manage business operations and increase productivity.

  • Sometimes employees have to work overtime. Biometric attendance system will alert employees to excessive overtime situations which helps to balance the workload. And also when employees work overtime they can feel confident it has been noticed

  • Biometric system improves accountability and responsibility for employees because it can accurately identify the late attendance, frequent, extended or unscheduled breaks. So employees tend to become more responsible and accountable for time management.

Cons of Biometric system:

  • The major drawback is the high cost which involves getting the systems run, storing and maintaining the biometrics.

  • Integrating Biometrics into the security programs is relatively complex when compared to the deployment of password-based solutions.

  • Biometric system relies strictly on the uniqueness of the biometric property. Sometimes an employee fingerprint may not be quickly scanned because of injuries, they change the surface of your skin and make your fingerprint unreadable.

  • Passwords, PINs can be reset if needed. But Biometrics are associated with the user and cannot be reset once compromised.

Biometric system is certainly an exciting system in identity management with more advanced techniques. With more advancement, it has both positive and negative aspects of its use. The organizations have to decide whether this is the technology they want to rely on.
