Farmhouse Living Room Decor

I love the new trend in modern farmhouse that Joanna Gaines has made so popular on her show Fixer Upper. Modern farmhouse is a fresh take on traditional country style decorating. It usually involves traditional farmhouse rustic materials and more contemporary design.

I love Joanna’s modern farmhouse in particular because it features a fresh color palette that suits the modern half of modern farmhouse. With this fresh color palette, even the most traditional furniture and decor looks fresh. Her favorite farmhouse paint colors are usually a pale blue or almost a seafoam. She also likes to use warm white and greys. He best interior looks are when she does color combination with cabinetry and wall paint. I love the pairing of unfinished woods and blue, or a white shiplap and brick. Joanna really does come up with the original color and texture combinations.

Another standout component of modern farmhouse decor is the use of vintage rugs. The most common fixer upper area rugs are vintage neutral ones. They add a little character to the room and the neutral colors go with everything. For a more modern take on the traditional vintage rug, try a bright colored distressed vintage rug in teal or red. It adds a more bohemian vibe to the room but paired with the right furniture and decor, it can add a bit of flair to the farmhouse look.

Joanna is also known for her lighting choices. Fixer Upper lighting the epitome of modern farmhouse decor. The right light can pull a room together not only by the way it lightens up the room but also by the colors and textures it adds. My favorite of the fixer upper lighting choices are the wooden pendant chandeliers. The unfinished wood material adds a rustic cozy feel to the room. Fortunately, most of her lighting choices are very much in line with one’s budget. There is usually an affordable version available through one of the main retailers.

It’s really fun to create your own modern farmhouse look by combining different elements of these styles. Instead of contemporary furniture design, go for a traditional english rollarm or a chesterfield sofa and add a more modern material like grey velvet. Or maybe add a bit of industrial modern flair with some dark metallic accents to a floor lamp or sconce. The easiest way to combine the two styles is to use smaller accessories. If the rest of the room already has a lot of modern elements, try finding a rustic unfinished wood tray to help decorate the coffee table. It can add a lot of utility to have a extra tray around. Or maybe freshen up a traditional living room set with a moroccan rug. It also adds a bit of bohemian vibe but it’s the juxtaposition of the different styles that makes it modern. I’m always looking for a new throw pillows. A new set can completely change the look of the place. Try a fresh geometric pattern to go with a classic leather couch.
