Things you should consider when buying a new motorhome

The key benefit of buying a second-hand motorhome is the reduction in price, as these vehicles are a significant investment of your money. Buying a used one could potentially save you up to £10,000. But before you spend this money, you may need to shop around to find yourself the best deal possible as you may be able to find a well-equipped motorhome for a decent price.

Firstly, its essential to know exactly you want from your motorhome. A good place to start narrowing down your search is by size. For example, how many people do you intend to be staying in the motorhome at one time? Motorhomes vary greatly in berth size, some having just one single bed or others catering for families and groups bigger than eight people.

Additional living and sleeping space can increase price significantly and is not something which can easily be added later on. Furthermore, will you be bringing large equipment with you? Bigger items such as bikes, skis and surfboards can take up lots of essential living space inside the vehicle, so if you plan on using these you will need to find a motorhome with plenty of storage.

Something which people often forget is the storage of a motorhome when they are not using it. Most houses will not have enough space to park a large eight berth vehicle, so this needs to be considered especially if you are buying a bigger motorhome.

Buying a large motorhome will not only increase the initial purchase price, but it is often more expensive to take these abroad as ferry companies set their prices depending on the size of the vehicle. Nowadays there are lots of space-efficient options available which have elevating roofs which provide additional sleeping areas.

The facilities inside of the motorhome are also a very important aspect for many potential motorhome buyers. What you need will greatly depend on the types of places you plan on travelling to. If you want to use your motorhomes to campsites, there is likely to be toilet and shower facilities on site which you can use. If you do require a bathroom, check that it is a sufficient size for your needs as these often tend to be quite small, which may not be preferable if doing long stays in the motorhome.

Another key facility is the kitchen. During your travels do you plan on eating out at restaurants often? If so, you may be able to live with the more basic kitchen designs. Some motorhome users find a microwave is sufficient, especially for those who only do short trips at a time.

Much like cars, motorhomes can attract the attention of thieves and are at risk of break-ins and theft. As a result of this, its essential that your motorhome has sufficient security and protection. This can include locks, tracking as well as insurance which will also cover you for damage from the likes of traffic accidents or bad weather.
