Food insecurity and hunger among children in Cook County

Dear Editor, this letter is to tell you about the food insecurity problem in Cook County, Chicago. For many years now this city has been fighting a losing battle in tackling the problem of food insecurity. We hope that the new approach that I will discuss how to tackle the food desert challenge.

Problem

Dear editor, you will be surprised to learn that there are about 800,000 individuals in Cook County including children having to struggle every day to gain access to healthy foods. The risk of hunger and going to bed with an empty stomach is now the main challenge facing the people living in Cook County.

Some of the reasons that have escalated this problem dear editor are the rising prices of foods that make it hard for individuals of low income to afford them. It makes the people of Cook County be among other ‘food insecure” persons around this nation according to the study by Map the Meal Gap 2014.

Dear editor, thousands of people in my neighborhood are struggling to access foods. I have seen many schools going children having to drop out so as to help their parents gain access to food. They also can’t go to school on an empty stomach. Editor, as women and men throughout my community are facing the consequences of stagnant income and high unemployment, I wonder how they will afford to buy the continued rising prices of food, which also place additional strain to many households throughout my Cook County.

A recent study of 2012 shows that the weighted cost for every meal in my community was .55. But this is a price that showed an increase from .51 in 2011 and .45 in 2010. I believe that the price now is almost at .0. Additionally, the problem of hunger disproportionally impacts on the lives of up to 255,180 in Cook County because they are among the food insecure person below the age of 18.  It is equivalent to about 20.8% of all the children’s population in my county.

 Solution

Dear editor, there is the need to address the problem of food security in my community by looking at various factors. These are the need to lower food prices, improving the lives of the power people and creating job opportunities. To handle these problems, it is crucial for city department representatives, research groups, universities, startups, nonprofit and companies representatives to come together to the department of public health to work together. They will discuss barriers to change, data and potential innovations to address the hunger problem in Cook County. Forming such a Department of Public Health project, a dear editor will be a way to identify the strategies and goals for improving the health of all residents living in my community and Chicago in general. Engaging the perspective of stakeholders, both communities sectors, and data across sectors will make us start thinking about the issue of food security through the use of modern technologies that will put into practice the concept of food sustainability.

Defend of solution

Dear editor, my community is one of the greatest cities in this great country around the world. Despite this, there are an unbelievable number of persons who wake up each morning not knowing where to find a meal. I believe that through the joining hands of various representatives, we can brainstorm on how to use modern technologies to generate solutions to ensure food sustainability in my community.
