Introduction: -

With a strength of above 1.2 million denizens serving to protect the country, the Indian Army has been accounted for being the second-largest Armed Force in the whole world. Today we are going to discuss the various sectors and sub-sectors of the Indian Army that one could possibly think of making a career in;

Non-Technical Forces:

1. Indian Army Armored Corps: -

The main armed combat division of the Indian Army, they’re the ones responsible for fighting enemies with tanks, missiles, and other heavy arms. This is the force designated to carry out high-end reconnaissance missions, that includes the protection of governing bodies like the Prime Minister and other elite officials.

The Armored Corps consists of 63 regiments, including the president’s bodyguards. Being one of the most prestigious divisions, they have one of the most revered regiments named 17 Horse that has the record of winning two Param-Vir Chakras, the highest military decoration in India.

2. Artillery: -

Accounting for one-sixth of the total strength of the Army, the Artillery consists of two sub-divisions:

Field Artillery: The largest military branch consisting of 190 regiments, this division is armed with guns, mortars & rocket-launchers and is responsible for most of the field works.

Corps of Army Air Defence: Responsible for carrying out air-defense tasks under a 5000 feet altitude, they are one of the most famous divisions who have proved their worth in projects like Operation Meghdoot, Operation Trident & Operation Falcon, and other “No War No Peace” Operations.

3. Army Aviation Corps: -

The division that is in charge of medical evacuations, CSAR, aerial attacks, and logistics support, was founded in November 1986.

4. Infantry: -

One of the most vital parts of the Indian Army, the Infantry consists of Foot-Soldiers, and is blamed to be the least spectacular force of all forces – but without which you can do nothing, nothing at all, as quoted by the legendary Field Marshall Bernard Law Montgomery; a victory in the battleground is officially established only when an Infantryman stamps his boot on the ground, and raises the National Flag to mark a captured enemy territory as their own.

Technical Forces:

1. Corps of Engineers: -

One of the oldest divisions of the Indian Army, it consists of three sub-divisions, namely:

Combat Engineers: Starting from building bridges and tracks to provide maneuverability to the army, they’re also responsible for de-constructing the same with bombs and other required arms to stall further enemy movement. The Regiments consist of the Madras Sappers, the Bengal Sappers, & the Bombay Sappers.

Military Engineering Services: This division handles the design, construction, and maintenance of all buildings, airfields, dock and other project installations – including accessorizing technical services for the Army.

Border Roads Organization: The primary responsibility of this team is to carry out projects of building airfields, buildings, national highways, bridges & other constructional necessities.

2. Corps of Signals: -

This division is responsible for maintaining & working on all the communication and telecommunication services, including software & system developments for the Indian Army.

1. Corps of Electrical & Mechanical Engineering: -

Maintaining the quality, structure, and dexterity of electrical and mechanical equipment used by the Indian Army is the primary job of this division; this includes vehicles, arms & engineering maintenance.

2. Army Service Corps: -

This division works on provisioning, procuring & distributing all supplies and commodities to the Army camps. This includes location facilities, fuel, hygienic products, food rations, and medical facilities. They also provide logistical and postal services, which has proven to be life-saving in many difficult situations.

3. Army Medical Corps: -

This division is in control of administrating medical support to all Army personnel and is also responsible for providing medical assistance for victims of natural/man-made calamities, both within the country and outside.

4. Army Dental Corps: -

This division looks after the dental hygiene issues among the Army.

5. Military Nursing Service: -

They’re entrusted with the job to treat & care for the wounded soldiers.

6. Army Ordnance Corps: -

Every important product required to carry out a successful operation - uniforms, arms & ammunition, clothing etc. for every unit, are provided by this division.

7. Remount & Veterinary Corps: -

Providing treatment and care to sick and wounded Army animals (dogs, horses etc.) is the primary job of this division.

8. Military Farms: -

This division is the primary provider of dairy and other animal products to feed the soldiers. They’re also responsible for providing fodder for Military animals.

9. Army Education Corps: -

This division handles the task of educating the soldiers.

10. Intelligence Corps: -

Acquiring, analyzing & working on sensitive information related to the country’s security protocols is the main motive of Intelligence Corps Officials.

11. Corps of Military Police: -

The police force of the Indian Army, they are trusted with controlling dawdlers, deserters. Refugees and prisoners of war and maintaining discipline in the Army cantonments and other premises.

12. Judge Advocate General Branch: -

They’re responsible for carrying out and dealing with all the legal affairs of the Indian Army.

13. Army Pioneer Corps: -

This division is the provider of disciplined and skilled manpower in regions where civilian employment is either not available or is restricted due to security purposes.

14. Army Canteen Departments: -

The employees from this division deal with providing the troops with basic supplies and provisional requirements.

15. Defence Security Corps: -

This division is responsible for securing designated defence installations like Tanks and other structures/equipment and protect them from vandalization and larceny.
