According to eMedium, The Brazilian mining company Vale will put 10 dams out of operation to prevent disasters like those of last week. A minimum of 84 people was killed on Friday in a state of affairs in the state of Minas Gerais. Hundreds are still missing.

According to the company, it costs at least $ 1.3 billion (.99 million pounds) and three years to put the dams out of operation.

The decision of Vale comes after Tuesday was announced that Brazilian prosecutors had arrested five people. Two of the three retained employees are senior managers of the mine. The position of the third employee is not known. The two other suspects are engineers.

In addition to the five arrest warrants, the prosecutors have also issued seven search warrants. This is on suspicion of murder, forgery of documents and environmental crimes.

The disaster caused a lot of commotion because three years ago in the area a dam of the company broke through, where nineteen people died. "We have decided that the company, once and for all, must do everything in its power to remove doubts about the safety of the dams," said CEO Fabio Schvartsman on Tuesday.
