Facebook CEO says merger to consider WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger

Social network Facebook is considering merging its chat apps WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram. That confirmed CEO Mark Zuckerberg after the presentation of the most recent quarterly figures written by Planet Engine.

With that, the Facebook boss reacts to rumours that happened earlier in January.

By combining the three apps, Zuckerberg wants to ensure that chatting via all Facebook services is just as safe everywhere. The use of end-to-end encryption, which is already being used in some apps, would play a significant role in this.

Also, the social network wants to ensure that users do not have to switch between apps continuously. At the moment, users of the Marketplace function on Facebook, for example, would switch to WhatsApp to respond to a message, while Messenger on Facebook is also available. The merger of the apps will not take place this year, says Zuckerberg.

At the moment Facebook is still investigating whether and how this would be carried out. "We are still thinking quite early on how that integration should work," says Zuckerberg. "We yet have to figure out a lot."
