Thinking of Doing Your Own Loft Insulation?

No-one’s disputing the efficacy of good, well fitted loft insulation – not only does it make the whole house a great deal warmer, but you can save a packet on your heating bills as well. Of course, the key words there are “well fitted” – Do a bad job, and you might as well not bother.

Now, there are two ways you can get that insulation down, and those are thus: You can either do it yourself, or you can get the experts in. Both options have pros and cons, and we’re going to explore them in the rest of this post. Also you must be sure if you should go with fiberglass insulation blowers   or cellulose insulation blowers.

Doing It Yourself

Of course, doing the work yourself is always going to be cheaper – no workmen to pay, after all – but laying insulation isn’t as easy a job as you might think, and there are a number of pitfalls – literally – that you can fall into if you’re doing the work. For a start, do you have the right buildings and contents insurance to cover you? Should you stick a foot through the floor of the attic, or accidentally damage the immersion heater? Make sure you have accidental cover if you’re determined to do the work, as the last thing you want is a great big hole in the ceiling that you have to pay for on top of everything else.

It’s also well worth roping a friend in to help out while you’re doing the work as well – climbing up and down a ladder gets very boring very quickly, and having someone who can help you out is a must.

Most importantly, research and make sure you know what you’re doing BEFORE you do it. The last thing you want to do is work yourself into a corner, both literally and figuratively!

Getting the Boys In

If you’re getting someone in to do it, you might be surprised to hear that there’s actually a right and wrong way to do this. First off, make sure you get yourself a few different quotes before you choose a builder – You want to find the cheapest quote from the best quality workman ideally – or a decent compromise between the two.

Bringing in a workman saves you a lot of time, effort, and worry – after all, these guys are trained to do this work, they should be properly insured, and it means you don’t have to spend your time scrabbling about in the roof of your house – all a great bonus.
