Fissure Treatment experts say that it is always important to maintain the stools soft and avoid strain to reduce the risk of tear around the anal area. Foods that cause hard stools are low in fiber and high in fat. So, to avoid hard stools or constipation focus on 20-25 gms of fiber-rich diet daily.

Some good food sources of fiber include:

  • Whole grains: Replace white bread and white rice with whole grain bread and brown rice. As you take more fiber, drink plenty of liquids to prevent bloating and gas. Whole grains provide magnesium which increases bowel health and maintain regular bowel movements.
  • Beans: Beans offer more fiber than almost any other fiber source. Beans slow down the digestion as it moves through your body, helping to keep stools softer and easier to pass.
  • Nuts: Pecans, walnuts, and almonds contain more fiber than other nuts. These help to reduce pain that usually comes with anal fissures.
  • Oatmeal: Oats contain more dietary fiber than any other grains available. It is an excellent way to get your bowels regular and helps in healing your fissure.
  • Pears: Pears have earned special recognition as being natural laxatives, helping the stools pass without causing any further damage. Some people use pear juice as a natural laxative.
  • Prunes and Prune Juice: The rich dietary fiber in prunes produce better stool consistency. This fruit is more effective than any other constipation relieving methods. So, increase your fluid intake with prunes.
  • Leafy Dark Green Vegetables: Improve your diet by Including leafy greens such as spinach, arugula, and romaine lettuce in your daily meals. Green leafy vegetables help regulate the digestive system and allow normal evacuation of bowels.

What food should avoid?

If you have an anal fissure, you will need to avoid eating  some foods which are listed below:

  • White flour: Consuming products made with white flour forms a sticky paste slows down the bowel movement, cause constipation, burning and itching your fissure. So avoid eating bread, bagels, and pasta which are made with white flour.
  • Added sugars: Food items like cookies, pastries, cakes, and doughnuts are low in fiber, low in fluid and high in fat. Avoid your intake of these foods and choose higher fiber snacks such as fresh fruits.
  • Processed foods, Frozen Dinners: When you are trying to avoid constipation, stay away from processed foods. Eat only fresh foods that include all the fiber and nutrient content.  Frozen dinners are almost always low in fiber as well.
  • Fried foods: Fried foods take a long time to digest which results in constipation. The high-fat content in fried foods has a tendency to slow down the bowel movement.
  • Unripe bananas: Ripe bananas helps in relieving constipation. On the other hand, unripe bananas contain a lot of starch which is hard to digest and cause constipation.
  • Spicy foods: Spicy and pickled foods can cause excess burning and irritation to the anal canal as they pass through the bowels. Avoid these foods when you treat anal fissures.
  • Dairy products: Products such as Cheese, ice cream, and other dairy products are hard to digest and cause problems in the digestive tract as they are high in fat and low in fiber. It is always best to avoid dairy products as constipated stools worsen anal fissures and will slow down the healing process.
