The term chromatography came from the 19th century. The Russian scientist Mikhail Tsvet firstly used it. It is a technique of separating mixtures which is known as chromatography. It is a process to separate a complex mixture into individual component exploiting the partition effect which distributes the molecules into the different stages. The mixtures are separated in the form of elements. It is a chemical reaction taken place in the liquids placed in the container. The separated components are further used for other processes. The basic components of chromatography are reservoir and pump. Mobile and reservoir phase are used in this.The reservoir is used to place the mobile solution. It depends upon the individual requirement to choose a pump to flow the mobile phase solution.

Types

There is basically four types of chromatography. These are listed as follows

  1. Column Chromatography- The different components having a particular shape, size, net charge, and binding agents are separated used the column chromatographers. In this biomolecules are purified using the separation technique. There are two phases such as mobile phase and stationary phase. The samples are gathered in the reservoir for further operation.
  2. Gas Chromatography- It is a convenient and straightforward which provides excellent separation of components from the liquid phase. In this technique, stationary phase is passed through the column placed in the reservoir. A mobile phase contains a carrier gas phase of Helium and Nitrogen. This gas is passed on the reservoir under high pressure. The sample liquid is vaporized and components left at the surface of the reservoir. The elements keep on moving in between stationary and mobile phase. The basic advantage of gas chromatography is that this technique separates the minute analytes from the liquid. The precaution to make gas chromatographer is column manufacturer must understand the specifications of the chromatographer before making the column
  3. Liquid Chromatography- It is also called paper chromatography. In this paper chromatography, a material made of cellulose is placed on the support material taken as filter paper. A saturation process takes place using the cellulose material. Water droplets considered as liquid phase settled on the filter paper. Hence, components are separated in the whole process. This process is also called liquid-liquid chromatography.
  4. Ion exchange chromatography- In this type anion exchange technique is used to differentiate the components. An electric charges are deposited on the substrate. A stationary phase is used in ion exchange chromatography to separate different compounds like ions, anions, acids, etc.

Applications of Gas Chromatography

  1. A volatile mixture is separated from the non-volatile mixture. These are used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and even different environmental like human breathing, blood and other samples are divided. These are analyzed using the gas chromatographers.
  2. Air samples also analyzed using the gas chromatographers. An air quality control units are used to detect the samples.
  3. Gas chromatographs are very useful as it reduces the retention time.

Conclusion

It is concluded that gas chromatographs are superior to other chromatographers. This is because very small analytes are separated from the volatile material. The separation of components through gas chromatography is secure and reliable than other chromatographers.
