Industrial Chillers - Keeping It Cold

Posted by kktchillersusa on March 4th, 2019

Industrial chillers systems do exactly what they say they do - keep something chilled so that it properly operates. But in the same way that playing baseball is easy, after all, just swing the bat and hit the ball (forgetting that someone is throwing a small, hard sphere at you over 90mph and causing it to curve), chilling machinery is not as easy as throwing it all in a refrigerated room. Read more about the process in this blog.

Keeping It Cool, or Cold

There are two basic factors involved in cooling industrial machinery. The first is cooling a machine or machinery in a process to optimum performance temperature and maintaining that. The second is dealing with the ambient temperature or environment to accomplish the same thing.
To properly chill a machine, you must:

• Use a chilling process that lowers temperatures to a desired level.

• Remove the heat created by the process of chilling.

• Maintain steady temperature levels to optimize machinery performance.

To deal with the ambient temperature, you must:

• Optimize the location of the chiller - installed in or near the machinery or installed externally.

• Carefully assess outdoor temperatures, as installing chillers along the Sahara Desert is different than installing them in the Arctic Circle.

Evaluating Options

Improvements in capabilities and technologies have allowed for the consideration of different options beyond simply deciding on a chiller to meet a defined need. Consider the following:

• Industrial chillers create heat when they're working. Now options for recycling that heat are available, including heat for the facility, heating water, or drying and cleaning.

• If a chiller is installed in cold environments, systems can be installed to draw in ambient air to assist in the cooling without engaging the refrigeration process.

• If machinery can provide for heating and cooling with one footprint, energy and resources are saved in the process.

Final Thoughts

What will determine a significant part of the chiller decision will be based on numbers. But it is important also to work with someone experienced with a wide range of machinery and with a variety of installations including locations geographically.

Spend time on the company web site and get to know their capabilities. Get familiar with such things as their service, maintenance, and training programs. And talk to them, beyond just the sales team. These are important relationships, because a lot will be riding on the industrial chillers systems you choose to install.
