IndyCar has signed a brand new media rights bundle with NBC Sports Group that will dramatically increase its exposure next season and move the Indianapolis 500 to another network for the first time since 1965.

Jon Miller, president of programming for NBC Sports Group, called the Indy 500"one of the wonderful jewels in all of sport" and said that he was thrilled the network was"entrusted" with all the iconic event.

 ABC's partnership with the Indy 500 was second in athletics just to CBS' coverage of the Masters. CBS first began covering the golf championship in 1956.

"We've had a wonderful and satisfying relationship with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Indianapolis 500 and IndyCar, and it's been our distinct honor to be partners for so many years," said Burke Magnus, ESPN executive vp programming and scheduling. "We look forward to the remainder of our events this year and wish them all the best in the future."

 The three-year deal with NBC starts in 2019 and gives NBC the entire IndyCar bundle. It has recently been divided between ABC and NBC Sports, and only ABC was allowed to air races on broadcast television. Watch Indy 500 Live Stream Online .

Under the contract, eight IndyCar races will be on broadcast next year, up from five which ABC aired. The rest of the program will be on NBC Sports Network.

The deal also places IndyCar from the NBC Gold package, a direct-to-consumer merchandise in which readers can buy additional content that's not televised.

The major prize of the package is that the Indianapolis 500, which NBC will incorporate in its own"Championship Season" marketing effort.

ABC had a stranglehold on the Indy 500 and its own contract restricted NBC-aired occasions to cable. The two IndyCar CEO Mark Miles and heavyweight staff owners Roger Penske and Chip Ganassi had stressed the need for IndyCar to be on a single network going forward with fewer races on cable.
