The Ethical Principles of Engineering

Introduction

Recently, the Engineering Council in conjunction with Royal Academy has proposed and implemented a number of guiding/ethical principles to which engineers and technical staff are required to subscribe today (Dixon et al., 2007). These principles follow one common track of thought; engineers and technicians ought to work with welfare, health and safety of themselves and the affected group as the main focus (Dixon et al., 2007). Thus, these principles guide that these technical professionals should pay due regard to (among others) the environment and the sustainable resources. Besides, these principles guide that the values on which they get based on the engineers ought to be valid in all situation in which the engineering and technical fraternity exercise their judgment. According to Dixon et al. (2007), four fundamental ethical principles exist, which guide engineers and technicians while trying to achieve their high ideals. These are as outlined below.

The first principle is referred to as the principle of accuracy and rigor (Dixon et al., 2007). This principle states that one of the duties of engineers and technicians is to ensure they competitively acquire relevant skills that they should wisely and faithfully disseminate when working and in serving people. In that case, the principle requires engineers to work diligently and with competence. Secondly, the engineers and technicians are required to serve in their most skilled areas. Thirdly, the principle requires them always to update their skills and knowledge while still assisting in the development of others. They should also accurately present reviewed evidence when at service of others, particularly non-engineer (Dixon et al., 2007)s.

Second is the principle of honesty and integrity which states that engineers and technician should adapt to the best standards of openness, fairness and rapport. That implies that first, they should be alert to their actions and how they will affect the others and the general environment. Integrity on their part should limit them from interfering with the rights and reputation of others. The principle of honesty also limits them form endeavoring in deceptive acts (Dixon et al., 2007). They should thus take the first line in the campaign against corrupt practices and any other professional misconduct.  Finally, the principle requires that engineers and technicians reject improper influences and thus extend their services to clients and core-professionals in reliable and trustworthy manner (Dixon et al., 2007).

Third is the principle of respect for life, law and respect for the public good. This principle quests for the placement of all due weight to the interests of the general public and rigid respect the federal law. This principle thus requires that engineers and technicians should ensure that their duties get dispensed by the law of the state. Secondly, their operations should minimize the adverse effect on the society sustaining the environment for the better of them and their succeeding generations. More so, the principle details that engineers and technicians should with dignity take due account to ensure paramount health others (Dixon et al., 2007).

Finally, is the principle of responsible leadership.This principle states that engineers and technicians should always look forward to high standards of leadership in their bid to manage and exploit the technology (Dixon et al., 2007). As leaders, they should seek to listen to form the people the effects that their operations have on the people and aspirations of the public concerning their services and act accordingly. Also, they should provide public awareness of the benefits engineering achievements objectively and to the brim of their capacity (Dixon et al., 2007).
