4 Things You Can Do With a Small Backyard

The woes of urban dwelling, although often outweighed by the advantages, can sometimes be quite troublesome. One of the biggest problems that people in Dallas face is the lack of open spaces. Cramped apartments with small balconies or houses with very little backyard space force people to go to public parks for their daily outdoor fix. However, those that have even a bit garden space in the backyards can, with just some effort, turn the area into an outdoor oasis. It is true that you cannot turn the space into a luxurious garden, but there are many other ways in which you can transform your tiny city backyard. For instance, you can make it kid-friendly by installing a Gorilla play set or a swing sets. And it is not difficult to do so. You can easily find play sets and wooden swing sets in Dallas.

Here are some other things that you can try out:

  1.  Create a vegetable garden

Wouldn’t it be nice if you did not have to eat plastic-wrapped store brought vegetables? A vegetable garden in your background may sound impossible, but it is not. A lot of food can be grown even in the smallest of spaces. All you need is some careful planning. For instance, to ensure that your plants receive enough sunlight, you can create a raised bed. If you are worried about the space that your vegetable plants may take up, focus on dwarf varieties.

  1.  Expand your living space

Expanding your living space does not necessarily mean that you have to set up a gazebo or an outdoor kitchen. Simply put up a few chairs and tables, and you have a new dining area for you to enjoy the pleasant weather days. For a more elaborate feel, pave over the yard with flagstone to create nice patio. Put up flower plants in pots and containers to create the illusion of a landscaped space.

  1.  Create a wildlife habitat

During a time when wildlife is constantly being threatened by human activities, you can make a difference by providing a habitat for the animals and birds in your backyard. The National Wildlife Federation calls such places wildlife habitat gardens. Planting a few native plants or birdbaths or even nesting boxes can benefit the small animals and birds in the area.

  1.  Turn it into a playground for kids

As said earlier, if you have kids in the house, your backyard can double up as their playground. Secure the yard so that the kids are able to play around or run freely. Swing sets, forts and monkey bars are some play equipment that you can install.

You may be presented with some challenges in the process of transforming your backyard, but the benefits that you will enjoy later are worth the effort.
