Holi, the festival of colors, water balloons and rain dances is just around the corner. Just like any other Indian festival, Holi too is incomplete without tasty delicacies.

With Holi yet to come, make a trip to your grocery shop nearby and get sorted with the important ingredients. As friends, family and loved ones come together to enjoy this vibrant and other colorful festivals, nibbling on delicious foods go without saying.

However, along with enjoying great delicacies, Holi is especially famous for bhaang. Made out of Indian cannabis, bhaang is a special Holi drink recipe and Lord Shiva’s staple, Holi is just the right occasion if you are looking to get high and buzzed in Indian style.

Your Go-to Guide on How to make tasty thandai this Holi

The Holi festival cannot be fully celebrated without the special desi cocktail, the Bhang Thandai recipe.

The ingredients:

Warm water – 1 cup

Almonds – 30 grams

Pistachios – 20 grams

Melon seeds – 30 grams

Dried rose petals or rose water – 2 tablespoons

Fennel seeds – 1 tablespoon

Whole black pepper – ½ teaspoon

Green cardamoms (remove husks and retain seeds) – 3 to 4

Saffron (Kesar) – 1 pinch

Sugar – 100 grams

Chilled milk – 1 glass

Ice cubes (as per preference)

Few rose petals or chopped almonds/pistachios for garnish

Initial Preparation –

  •          Pour a cup of warm water in a bowl.
  •          Then add the dry fruits (almonds and pistachios), poppy seeds (khus -khus), melon seeds, dried rose petals, fennel seeds, and black pepper
  •          Mix these ingredients well and keep aside for minimum 1 or 2 hours. If you prefer using lukewarm (or room temperature) water, then you can keep it aside overnight or for 4 to 5 hours.

Making Thandai Paste –

  •          After 1 or 2 hours, pour the entire mixture (including the soaking water) in a grinder or blender jar.
  •          Add ½ cup sugar, the 3-4 green cardamom seeds and 1 pinch of saffron.
  •          Now blend the mixture into a smooth and fine paste and then keep it aside in a bowl.
  •          If you are preparing the paste in advance then you can cover and refrigerate it.

The last and final stage in the thandai recipe is mentioned as below:

Making Thandai Recipe –

  •          To prepare thandai, pour 4 tablespoons of the thandai paste in a glass, and then add chilled milk.
  •          Mix well and add ice cubes.
  •          Finally, garnish the thandai with rose petals. Alternatively, you can also garnish the thandai with chopped almonds or pistachios.
  •          Serve thandai immediately or refrigerate it for a later time.
