REVIEW: PEER GYNT AND THE NORWEGIAN HAPA BAND

The Off-Broadway musical, ‘Peer Gynt and the Norwegian Hapa Band’ directed and comprehended by Jack Tamburri is loosely based on Henrik Ibsen’s ‘Peer Gynt’. Ma-Yi production has made a bold move to re-imagine this production which is rather a difficult one to be produced. The original playwright Ibsen was taken by the Per Gynt fairy tale and somewhat made his work related to it.

However, Ma-Yi Theater Company receiving music by Paul Lieber and Matt Park, who also played the lead role tells a story of a fussy, struggling teenager rock artist/musician. In short Peer Gynt and the Norwegian Hapa Band is an amusing Ibsen adaptation with original rock music. Unfortunately, it does not reach the heights the original work did. One of the positive aspects about the Ma-Yi version of production is they have cut down the extra hours the original Ibsen production had. Under the direction from Jack Tamburri and excellent orchestration from Chad Raines, this version boasts its longer title. Matt Park as Peer, depicts the perfect staying in his bedroom, rock music playing young teen. There is no doubt his gripping performance is the main highlight of the show. Park is the epitome of a wistful and rock-loving teenager and that’s great because that is the main idea of this adaptation. He knows how to sell and gives the best bits to the basic concept of the production. His brilliant performance makes us believe in the peer’s adventure to find himself. Other mentionable acts are Angel Desai as Ingrid, Rocky Vega as Solvay, and Mia Katigbak as Peer’s mother Ose.

I personally liked the staging as well, the set was imagined as a rock club, with a slight raised stage for the band. You can see most of the action from the book come alive in this production. The set designing by Meredith Reis is praise-worthy and I must stay that it was used well by the director Jack Tamburri. The sound designs by Raines accompanies the acts very well too and were certainly a challenge to come across such rock music.

The production is still in theaters at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall Oregon of Portland, Peer Gynt Tickets Discount Coupon are available at Tickets4musical for purchase get them now if you want a glimpse of this adaptation.

One of the facts should be noted if you are thinking about watching the show is if you are not familiar with the original play or haven’t read the synopsis the least get ready to be totally confused. The actors other than Matt Park are playing more than one role and story randomly shifts from one scene to another, from one-time place to another is a blink of an eye and it becomes extremely hard to interpret who is who and what is actually happening if you are new to the story. So prepare your homework if you want to enjoy the show without being lost.

All in all the scenes are entertaining and the songs are quite fantastic and the story is moving as well. But regrettably, there is some scene that is a bit of exaggeration, with some so confusing and left-out that it does not help the spectators the least with understanding the forwarding story. Get the Peer Gynt Tickets at Tickets4Musical. One of the numbers that is dully focused on Ibsen’s fourth act critical song on business and capitalism is so out of place and unsystematic. It was a good idea to make an adaptation out of Ibsen’s one of best works but it could have been better if some trimming of extra acts and songs could been cut-off to reach the heart of the story.
