Halmoni and the Picnic is a story in our unit of study. This is a story that most students enjoy reading year after every year. My additions to the lesson to the reading lesson are in italics to show how I could make the lesson more multicultural.

The summary of the Halmoni and the Picnic story: Yunmi is concerned about her grandmother, Halmoni, who has lately moved from the country of Korea to stay with Yunmi's family in America. The grandmother is not comfortable in the strange new culture, and she is too shy to converse in English and create new associates. Yunmi and her schoolmates Anna Marie and Hellen decide to ask Yunmi's grandmother to join them in their class picnic. Halmoni accepts and cooks a Korean dish called Kimbap for the kids. It is a huge achievement, and the kids even create a jump-rope rhyme about it. At the end of the picnic, Halmoni tells Anna Marie and Hellen goodbye in her new State’s language, English.

After reading allow the students to talk about some vocabulary words used all through the story. The words reported by students are embarrassed, disturb, dignified, cautiously, and relieved. I use an activity provided to define these terms additionally. There are sentences listed for every vocabulary word with ways to act out the words. We break these sentences into strips and take turns drawing them out. We usually work in groups so that every student gets an opportunity to participate if they desire. A way to promote language with students would be to ask students to think of several ways people converse with one another. To boost the Halmoni and Picnic story, I think it would be obliging to find North Korea on the map of the world. At different points in history, the country of Korea was ruled and greatly influenced by Japan and China. Koreans, however, are timeworn and identical, or alike, individuals.

Typically I allow my students read the story by in turns, ensuring that each student has his or her own turn. Sometimes I have the girls read a page altogether, at times all the boys read at once, sometimes I read a page aloud and other times the east or west half of the class. I can see that this takes the attention of the student who isn’t such a good reader and it this strategy does well in my classroom. There is good comprehension questions listed in my teaching manual that I use. After the execution of the new joint center standards, I have learned that I should have the students review the story. This is an issue I plan to add to the lesson. To help understand the story, I tell the students to go through the pages and attempt to foretell what will happen in the story. I have the students try to suggest which characters are grandmother Halmoni, Anna Marie, Yunmi, and Helen. As they try to find these characters, I ask my students whether they think they feel sad or happy. When we have done reading the story, I feel it is essential to have the students discuss whether their projections about what the story would be about being right. Then I ask the students what is the problem in the story and how was it solved. A number of the concepts taught in this story include predicting outcomes, writing an invitation, using context to figure out unknown words, and irregular verbs. It would be fun for the students to set apart some time and write their own invitation for that event.

The word culture could be a class discussion or the students draw a diagram of the term culture in the middle and various ideas and words emanating from it. The examples of factors that build up a culture are celebrations, traditions, different kinds of foodstuff and how the foods are consumed. Also information that families pass to the next generations, how an individual appreciates himself or herself in connection with others, how persons commune and appreciate one another. The students can relate the word to the different customs signified in the class. Discuss on how there can be a mixture of cultures in a single nation, for example, America and how new customs can be created when individuals of different traditions interrelate. In addition, discuss how traditions might have various ways of assisting students learn new concepts.

An essential aspect of Halmoni and Picnic story is that at the commencement of the story the Halmoni feels isolated and sad about her new life in America. When Halmoni was asked to join their class picnic, her emotions for America changed and she becomes happier. The classmates even make up a jump rope song about the special food she prepared for the picnic. Have students create a variety of rhymes to share among themselves during school break. Students may be surprised to learn that jump rope started out as an activity for boys, it was considered unladylike for girls to jump rope. The textbook provides a short summary of the author and illustrator. We read these aloud and discuss what we have learned about them. It might be interesting for the students to search and find out more about their backgrounds and how this may have encouraged the writing of Halmoni and the Picnic story.

My Reflection

While analyzing this unit of study, I realized that there was a lot that could be added to the original framework to combine multicultural content and address adversity. I found it fairly simple to create the additions after being a part of this Class, Race, and Power. By adding the discussion of the word culture and how it influences our day to day lives, and writing reflections i feel the class will have a wider understanding of the Korean culture. To make the lesson more exciting I think I should ask the students to research on the recipe of making the Korean food-Kimbap and then we prepare the meal in class. The food should be eaten using chop sticks as Korea people eat the meal.
