May 4, 2019 and will be streamed exclusively live on DAZ

In 2018 the world of boxing give us a historic events. Canelo Alvarez won a controversial decision in the Gennady Golovkin rematch. Deontay Wilder fought two big-time opponents in Luis Ortiz and Tyson Fury. And Oleksandr Usyk beat Murat Gassiev in perhaps the most anticipated cruiserweight bout ever. Now, it’s time to look ahead to 2019 and figure out what we want and what we deserve to see.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Daniel Jacobs: Don't think about a 3rd Alvarez vs Golovkin fight—at least for now. Instead, le he’s never faced before, and in Jacobs’ case, it just so happens that he’s one of the three-best 160-pounders in the world (all of this assumes that Alvarez, even though he beat super middleweight Rocky Fielding in December, will return from 168 pounds). Making matters even easier is that Alvarez, after signing a 5 million deal last year, and Jacobs are both affiliated with the DAZN streaming service. Alvarez would probably be the favorite here, but Jacobs would be a live underdog. It could be a fascinating fight between two fighters in their primes.

Gennady Golovkin vs. Jermall Charlo: Speaking of top-tier middleweights, Golvokin vs. Charlo would manage one of two things: Give Charlo the elite victory he desires or rejuvenate Golovkin’s career after a draw and a loss to Alvarez in his last two fights. Charlo is coming off a tougher-than-expected victory vs. Matt Korobov, and there are real questions about whether he can compete at the elite level at 160 pounds (there are also questions about whether Golovkin is getting too old to be at this level, as well). Golovkin is a TV free agent, and he’s reportedly talking to Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) about his next move. If he signs with the PBC, where Charlo also fights, this matchup could actually happen.

Mikey Garcia vs. Vasiliy Lomachenko: If it feels like this fight might never happen, you might be on to something. Lomachenko made million to fight Jose Pedraza in December, but it’s likely Garcia will make more than that in March when he moves up from 135 pounds to 147 pounds to fight Errol Spence. It’s a fight he’ll likely lose—at this point, he’s a +350 underdog. Perhaps Garcia would return to lightweight to face Lomachenko, but if he upsets Spence somehow, you can probably forget it. Even if he loses, Garcia might remain at 147 pounds or just move down a weight class to junior welterweight, a weight class where Lomachenko might be too small to ever venture. This fight seems unlikely happen, but if it ever does, it probably needs to happen soon.

Oleksandr Usyk vs. Andre Ward: After a fantastic 2018, where he won the World Boxing Super Series tournament to become the undisputed cruiserweight champion and then knocked out Tony Bellew to send him to retirement—all while earning approximately million—Usyk is my fighter of the year. He’ll probably move up to heavyweight, but one intriguing possibility for him to stay at the 200-pound weight limit would be a chance at the retired Ward. This could make plenty of money for both parties and is probably the only real chance Usyk has to lose (unless he moves up to heavyweight). It’d be a tossup fight, and it’d be a great way for Usyk to be introduced to the American audience. Or it could spell the rebirth of Ward. Either way, it’d be a heck of an event.

Errol Spence vs. Keith Thurman: This won’t happen anytime soon. Thurman has been out with an injury since March 2017, and he’ll be expected to take a couple of soft touches—including the well-worn Josesito Lopez this month—before facing an elite opponent. But a Spence vs. Thurman fight would be mighty tasty. Both are with PBC, so it doesn’t figure to be a tough matchup to make. And perhaps more than any other welterweight not named Terence Crawford, Thurman would provide a real threat to Spence’s undefeated record.
