Tips on How to Save Space in Your Apartment

If you have a small apartment, you may wonder how to incorporate interior design without being cluttered. Here are some ways to save space and maximize style.

Layout

The first way you can enhance the design of your space is to think about the layout. If you have a studio apartment you can use partitions, furniture, or shelves to separate the room into zones. Hanging stylish curtains is a great way to hide combo washer dryer units and laundry areas from the rest of the room.

Look for negative areas that are not being utilized for extra storage space, like behind doors, above shelves, or under the bed. You can use hidden storage furniture like ottomans and end tables to provide covert containment in plain sight. Hanging an extra rod in your closet will maximize your organization. Using convertible furniture that can expand when needed and collapse when unnecessary is another good idea to maximize the area that you have.

Decor

Save yourself valuable floor space by utilizing the walls and installing hanging items. Wall hooks for coats and floating shelves are great ways to stay tidy. Use overhead lights so you save on table space instead of using bulky lamps. The higher the light is mounted the taller the room will look, so keep the pendant lighting for later, and go with flush mounts instead.

As you focus on decor remember the trick that light colors make spaces feel bigger, and dark colors make spaces feel smaller. Use lighter colors in the majority of your room decor, and save bold and darker colors for smaller accents like textiles, rugs, and throw pillows. Mirrors are another space enhancer. Opening the curtains will help a space feel less confined as well. You can use a window tint to maintain some privacy, and then keep the main curtains open during the day. Focus on the adage that less is more. Keeping your color choices and decor items to a minimum will help the space feel more cohesive and less crowded.

Appliances

Perhaps the area that seems the least negotiable is appliances. However, there are lots of space saving options that will work great for your apartment.

Two-in-one appliances, like combo washer dryer units, are a great way to save space. You can purchase smaller versions of appliances, or look at having one built-in to your countertop or cabinetry. It also helps to prioritize what you really need. If you never use a blender, a coffee maker, or a toaster, there is no need to hold on to it and waste counter space. By getting rid of what you don’t use, you will make more room for what you do.
