7 Signs You Need to Replace Your Car?s Windshield

Posted by Sam Smith on March 27th, 2019

The windshield is one of the most important parts of a vehicle as it protects the driver and other co-riders from flying rocks, debris and dust. In this way, it helps the driver in driving the vehicle properly. Hence, it has to be kept in a good condition no matter what. Though windshield manufacturers create it with a sturdy glass type like laminated, it might get damaged due to several reasons like strong wind or a hard rock hitting it while you’re driving. Many car owners tend to neglect such small seeming damage and may plan to repair it later which is an absolute no-no. Instead, you should fix it as early as possible. To help you understand when to replace your car’s windshield, we are going over all the crucial signs that you should consider.

1. Cracks, Chips and Scratches

It’s vital to see properly when you’re driving and a minor crack, chip or scratch can interfere in your vision and may lead to accidents that can be hazardous. So, the moment you see minor blemishes, you should get them repaired from an expert. But if there is a crack that is more than three inches, then you’ve to replace the windscreen.

2. Pitting

Flying debris like tiny rocks and gravel can cause pitting on the windshield surface. This may remain unnoticed unless you drive in the dusk or at night when headlights of the approaching vehicles are on. These small pits scatter reflected light reducing your visibility while you’re driving.

3. Missing Pieces

There can be instances where some parts of the windshield may be missing due to several reasons like a minor accident or heavy rock hitting it. If this is the case, then you should get a new windshield because it can weaken the vehicle’s structural support and can lead to breaking.

4. White Haze

A windshield is made of a laminated glass that contains a thin plastic layer (PVB) that prevents it from shattering into sharp shards during a high-impact collision. If this layer comes off from its edges, a white haze will be formed meaning it can no longer ensure your safety.

5. Internal Glass Damage

When you run your fingers along the windscreen from the inside and feel rough edges and cracks, you should get it replaced. This is the only solution in such cases, unlike external damage like small cracks, scratches or chips.

6. Upcoming Vehicle Inspection

Do you have a vehicle inspection in a few days? If so, then you should check the windshield properly and make sure it is devoid of any type of cracks, scratches or chips. This is important because any such damage can cause your vehicle to fail the inspection which can bring unwanted hassle in the future.

7. Incorrect Installation

If the windshield is not installed correctly, it can create uneven pressure leading to chips and cracks. So, you should always hire a professional to conduct the job as he/she is an expert and is well aware of the fitting procedure. By doing so, you will save money and ensure safety in the long run.

These are some clear signs that you shouldn’t ignore. Once you spot any of them, contact a car glass expert and replace the windshield as early as possible because your safety comes first.
