Plant-based vaccines are increasingly being studied as a cheap alternative to the conventional vaccine in terms of efficiency, production time, and immune system. Plant-based vaccines market includes few market player and increasing number of start-up and research institutes, which are focused on R&D activities to develop treatment therapies for various infectious disease indications such as flu, dengue, norovirus, and avian influenza H5N1; based on new plant-based source vaccine.

For instance, in August 2018, researchers from Arizona State University’s (ASU) Biodesign Institute, developed a norovirus vaccine from tobacco plant. Genetic engineering has allowed researchers to transfer specific genes from tobacco plant in designing plant-based vaccine for norovirus. Plant-based vaccine safe and effective for use against various infectious diseases as it activates patient’s immune system.

In June 2018, researchers from the University of Nottingham, Malaysia, announced a project to develop plant-based vaccine for treatment of dengue fever, caused by Aedes genus mosquitoes. The researchers produced vaccine antigen within the tobacco plant, which can neutralize dengue virus. Moreover, utilization of plant source in virus production offers new platform to provide vaccine that can be taken orally, as currently available vaccines are mostly given intravenously.

Other than tobacco plant, researchers are also working on edible plant species such as lettuce for future vaccine production. Successful completion of research studies would offer a safe and cost effective treatment to prevent dengue. For instance, according to the Journal of Botany: March 2016, the dengue virus vaccine targeting dengue-3 serotype polyprotein (DENV3prM/E) was produced in Lactuca sativa (lettuce) through a chloroplast transformation. It is further concluded that, lettuce is an excellent host for agroinfiltration with deconstructed viral vectors.

Plant-based vaccines against HIV have gained significant traction of researchers, since AIDS has evolved as an alarming health problem, which is increasing economic burden of African countries and several emerging economies. According to the The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS); in 2017, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa accounted for 95% of new HIV infections. Easy production, oral administration of plant-based vaccines, and absence of purification needs offer great advantage in designing plant-based viral vaccines.

Oral vaccines using plant-based formulations are considered as an alternative or may supplement for standard injection vaccines in the Hepatitis B (HBV) treatment, owing to low-cost production and easy vaccination. However, low efficiency and oral-tolerance are the main barrier in the production of plant-based anti-HBV vaccines.

Key players operating in the global plant-based vaccines market include Medicago Inc., Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation, iBio, Inc., Fraunhofer Center for Molecular Biotechnology (CMB), Protalix BioTherapeutics, and others.
