11 Self Tanning Myths Debunked

Self tanning lotions are seen as the most convenient and easiest way to get a tan in today’s modern times. This is true because there’s no need to expose your skin to sunlight to get the desired tan. Since the use of a self tanner lotion is becoming mainstream, there are myths that follow the product which dissuades many from using them.

Here are some myths commonly associated with self tanner and the truth behind them:

Myth 1: Moisturising Is Bad

This is debatable seeing as moisturizing using an oil-based product will prevent the tanning lotion from sticking, but an oil-free, on the other hand, will help keep your skin hydrated and healthy without affecting the tanning lotion results.

Myth 2: Self Tanning Products Last Months

False. Even the best self tanning products can only last up to a week so if you don’t like the color you don’t have to wait long to change it.

Myth 3: Your Skin Will Turn Orange

As long as you choose the right kind and shade of self tanning lotions you don’t have to worry about looking orange at all.

Myth 4: All Tanners Are Create The Same

So very wrong. There are all types of self tanning products in the market and they do not offer the same effects. Some tanners work better on others and it will take a while to find one that meets your needs and expectations.

Myth 5: sun tanning lotions And Self Tanning Lotions Are The Same

Not at all. Sun tanning lotions are usually used under the sun to increase the tanning effects while self tanning lotions do not require direct sunlight exposure for them to take effect.

Myth 6: You Can Skip The Exfoliation

If you are too lazy to exfoliate your skin might as well not use the tanning product. Exfoliation is a necessary step in self tanning as it reduces uneven color formation.

Myth 7: You Can Apply The Tanner Without Technique

Although you can just slather the tanning lotion on your skin, you will not get the best results. It is best to apply the product evenly and massage it thoroughly on the skin for the perfect coverage.

Myth 8: There’s No Need To Use Sunscreen

A sun tanning lotion is not sunscreen because it will not protect your skin from skin damage caused by UV rays. It is recommended to apply sunscreen with a minimum of 15 SPF for added protection when going outside.

Myth 9: Sunlight Is A Must

Too much sunlight exposure is unhealthy for the skin. While it is good to get some sun for a few minutes a day, limit exposure for safety.

Myth 10: Self Tanning Is Unsafe

Not by a long shot. Self tanning products in the market have been tested and FDA approved for use so there’s no need to worry.

Myth 11: Gloves Are A Waste Of Money

Unless you want to have heavily stained palms, buying a pair of tanning mitts is a must. It is a small investment to ensure your hands stay an even and beautiful color even with regular tanner application.
