Introduction

The “Making of a slave” is a letter by Willie Lynch. Willie Lynch was a white slave owner who made the speech on the banks of James River in 1712 (Willie 1999). Willie was a slave owner in West Indies who come to United States so as to tell American slave owners of how to keep their slaves under control. In “Making of a slave” lynch devised a plan for helping black people to stay divided. The letter tends to be a major problem for the African-American race. This paper will discuss Willie Lynch’s “Making a slave” and the way his beliefs affected blacks during his time and even today.

Making a slave effects on African Americans

Lynch developed his theory of controlling the black slaves. According to Lynch, he had concerns with the fortunes of his slave-holding brethren in the American colonies and presented a lecture explaining how to keep the disobedient servants disunited. He said that we must pity the old against the young, male against female, dark against light and many more. According to Lynch, the disunifying strategies would be able to control slaves for at least 300 years. The statement by Lynch seems to be why black people are not able to get ahead now. Slavery tends to be a complex set of economic, social, and legal relations that boiled down to white and black.

Slavery of African Americans in US ended many years ago; however, there is the emotional and psychological stress placed on African Americans who are still struggling to deal with the issue of slavery. In the past, the slave owners abused, terrorized, stigmatized, and traumatized the African Americans so as to invoke fear in the bodies of the Africans (Brown, 2013). They took Africans from their countries and then brought to the new world and endured a life of repression, exploitation, and rape. In making a slave, Lynch tends to use distrust, fear, and envy in controlling slaves (Willie 1999). The speech that he provides to other slave owners has methods for keeping slaves under his control for the next three hundred years. According to Lynch, slave owners must use differences between the slaves so that to make slaves more obedient.

The bottom line of Lynch method of keeping slaves in line is in order to divide them against one other. The factors used include size, age, intelligence, color, attitude of owners, size of plantations, location of slaves, and hair texture of slaves. Using the method provided by Lynch, the manipulation of slaves leave them to only be reliant and trust their white slave owners. Lynch does not refer to African slaves as humans, but as properties and valuables. The de-humanization and blatant disdain for the African American race tend to keep these people misrepresented in the multitude of misguided conceptions and myths of the black race. Lack of Black Nationalism tends to leave African Americans misled and lost in America. Today, the behaviors of American Americans who are victims of Lynch syndrome tend to continue being oppressed in a nation that wants to discriminate against minorities.

Observing the present time, it is 2015, and the effect of Lynch method are still present. Black people tend to be the most self-hated people across the world and to look at every race, one can see that there is some form of cohesion between them. According to Lynch, he wanted to divide black people so that we can depend on the slave owners, and that is happening even today. For instance, white people may hate one another; however, if something bad happens such that they may lose power, they tend to come together so that to stop the force from prospering. The same applies in the Asian and Hispanic and these races are very independent and consider taking care of each other (Brown, 2013). However, the black people will sell each other out in a second provided someone takes care of the person. The effect of Willie Lynch is still present even today. Most of the Africa Americans are still distrusting their fellow men whether they are their enemies, superiors or suppliers. The effect of Lynch tends to be affecting our young black people in today’s society.

The black men are selling drugs in the society, killing each other during drug deals, and also killing each other over simple disputes. The lynch effect is also the cause of why black people believe that they cannot do any better and are now living in ghetto’s across different places in America. In almost every situation, the white man is always the one to blame for every injustice brought against them. If African Americans would look within themselves and operate with respect for other people, they would succeed. When the black man encounters trouble, they tend to start whining and blaming everything on the whites (Brown, 2013). There is a form of racism still in existence in American today, and sometimes prejudice keeps Black people down. However, the main cause is self-hate that is hate present in each black American, and they are passing it for hundreds of years.

Today, Willie Lynch beliefs are evident among young people and portrayed in terms of dark-skinned and light-skinned. The problem is quite prevalent in social media with stereotypes of dark skin versus light skin. These are stereotypes in the black community that tend to be dangerous, cancerous, and also shape the way we view ourselves. In 1712, Lynch spoke of ways of breaking apart the tightly unified black woman and man (Willie 1999). The unity between slaves resulted in revolts, and they killed their owners and often ran away. As a result, Lynch decided to create a plan that would control slaves mentally and physically if executed correctly. Lynch decided to take the small difference such as color shade to as to break the unity between the blacks. He created light skin and dark skin so as to create differences among blacks. Lynch did have principles for dividing unified black people. Years ago during slavery, slave owners would separate light skinned from dark-skinned slaves through allowing light skinned slaves to work in the slave owner’s households and dark-skinned slaves to work in the fields. As a result of Lynch belief, it caused dark-skinned slaves to hate light-skinned slaves because they were living in houses with the owners and they also received better treatment.

In my opinion, what Lynch stated about light skin and dark skin is still happening today. People tend to look down those with darker skin more than those with light skin. Lynch established the stereotype, and it is happening even today. Lynch looked down at African American race thinking that it is possible to manipulate and control them (Willie 1999). Today, people joke about the light skin and the dark skin and even go to the extent of creating memes about it. Racism is an issue that dwells in our minds, and we should realize that our skin color is an understatement. The diversity in American tends to be a beautiful thing; however, prejudice and racism is getting the better of us.

Slavery did end many years ago, but African Americans still have the slave mentalities. Lynch encouraged practices meant to enslave African Americans such as turning light skin slaves against dark skin slaves and young against old. Today, most African Americans are not reading and there tend to be a division between the old and the young. Lynch beliefs tend to have a great impact on the African Americans even today. The light skinned African Americans are discriminating against dark skinned African Americans and vice versa (Brown, 2013). I have experienced the scenario where I have met dark skinned African Americans claiming that light skinned African Americans tend to act conceitedly and very quickly to tell your business. The idea tends to cause prejudice because meeting a light skinned person who acts that way does not mean that all light skinned African Americans are the same.

Conclusion

The beliefs of Willie Lynch tend to create an impact in our modern society. Lynch ideas continue to happen even today where there are people of other skin colors who believe that they can control others just because of their skin tone.  Looking in today’s community, we are still separating ourselves from the race indicating how effective lynch belief is even today.
