Things to do in Barbados

With its beautiful, picturesque beaches and rich and colourful culture, Barbados offers a great variety of activities, whether you are just looking to sit back, relax and enjoy the stunning surroundings or want to be active and explore the various places and water sports available, there is something for everyone.

The iconic white sand beaches are perfect for simply spending time relaxing in the sun, or if you are looking for something a bit more different and exhilarating, there are numerous water-based activities for you to get involved with. There are various beaches which provide the perfect places for people to surf, whether you are trying it for the first time or are highly experienced. Peak surfing season is usually during the British wintertime, offering waves up to twelve feet tall.

For a truly unique holiday experience, you can swim with wild turtles in the sea. Some of the beaches are highly populated, meaning you can swim straight from the shore.  A notable tip is to head towards groups of boats as they are often found feeding the turtles. You can also take boat trips which will take you further out into the sea to find the turtles.

Other water sports which are popular for both holiday makers and residents of the area include jet-skiing, boogie boarding, paddle boarding and kitesurfing. Alternatively you could try spearfishing, or even take a day long sailing trip. If you visit in January, you could even get involved with the Barbados Sailing week which has been running for around one hundred years.

For those interested in the history of the island, you can make a visit to Bridgetown, which was a key area when the British Colonies developed during the 1800s. This town was a trading centre for goods and services during those times but in this place there were also developments within science and technology. The impressive architecture of the Garrison attracts thousands of visitors each year, with key tourist locations including the fort. Another historic place of interest on the island is George Washington house which is a museum that is traditionally furnished to show how people lived during the 1700s.

In addition to all of these, make sure to explore the great range of food experiences which Barbados has to offer, from traditional street food to exclusive outdoor beach dining experiences. Barbados also has a great, fun-filled nightlife, being home to numerous nightclubs, some which are open air on the beachfront.
