Reasons why you should switch from single to double glazing

Insulation

One of the most important reasons why you should replace your single glazed windows for double glazed is because of the increased insulation they provide, meaning that they hold heat within your house for longer. Double glazed windows are made up of two glass panels which are sealed together with a gap of air or gas kept between them. This additional layer of glass in combination with the air vacuum is what helps to stop the warm air leaving through the window panes. As the double glazed windows help to retain the heat within the house, it is then more likely that you will not need to have the heating on for as long or at such a high temperature, which results in reduced energy bills and should help save money. Houses which are cold for longer periods of time are more likely to encounter damp walls and mould, which despite being nasty and unhealthy can also be expensive to restore in the long term if it keeps recurring.

Noise

In addition to keeping the heat in, double glazed windows can also help to keep noise out. External noises such as road traffic or people passing by can be disruptive and annoying, particularly when it occurs during the night. The two layers of glass make it more difficult for soundwaves to pass through the window, effectively getting reduced when passing through the air gap between the panes. Windows which are properly fit will be sealed securely, making sure as much sound is reduced as possible.

Security

Windows are one of the most common ways that burglars use to break into a property, with single glazed windows thought to be more of a high target due to the fact they are easier to break as single glazing window panes can be as thin as 3mm. Therefore by having double glazing installed you may be able to help deter burglars from even attempting to break into your property, let alone making it increasingly difficult to gain access to your house if they do attempt a break in. It is also extremely difficult for people to try to open double glazed windows from the outside as they have very strong frames. Installing double glazed windows should therefore provide you with some more peace of mind that your home, family and possessions are safer.
