Micronization is the term used to describe the process of decreasing the size of the particles in solid material. Jet Milling

Jet milling is the process of micronizing the solid materials found in chemicals, minerals, and pigments. This technique is mostly used in the pharmaceutical industry and is the standard method for reducing the size of API particles. It’s also used to micronize materials that are heat sensitive, corrosive, and abrasive.

 During this process, particles are broken up by using high-speed compressed air or inert gas rather than by the use of mechanical components. Compared to mechanical milling, jet milling reduces metal contaminations.

Bead Milling

The process involved in bead milling is known as dispersion. Bead mill machines are used in the dispersion process where the adhesive force that is found between solid materials must be overcome. During the process, solid particles are reduced in size. After they're finely dispersed, the particles are wetted out in a liquid phase. Since the process occurs in a wet environment, it avoids problems that typically stem from dust accumulation.

 Bead mills are mostly used in industrial processing for grinding and dispersing agglomerated particles. However, in recent years, there has been increasing interest in bead milling as a method for micronization in pharmaceuticals. Bead milling is one of the most effective ways to process fine particles of API into a sub-micron or even into a nanometer scale.

 The type of technique that is used affects the properties of a micronized drug substance. Properties affected are the material's agglomeration behavior, particle size and distribution, powder flow, and shape.

 Micronization is just one of the few new techniques for ensuring the safe and effective delivery of APIs in new forms, such as creams and other ointments. Whether the product is ingested orally or inhaled, solubility is a key factor in bioavailability and in proving a drug's effectiveness.
