How Long Do Aluminum Gas Tanks Last?

The life of aluminum gas tanks depends on a lot of factors such as proper installation. If it is rightly placed it can even last forever. But the fuel tanks are responsible to hold different liquids that support the boat to run with the help of an affined engine. So it becomes a crucial job to run it efficiently. The worst experience boater combat is a leaking or faulty tank. It can be hazardous, expensive, and inconvenient. However, most of the studies and surveys suggest that the average lifespan of boat gas tanks is a minimum of 10 years.

But if you’re concerned about the life of your tank or want to purchase a new one, most manufacturers will recommend a tank made from aluminum. The material is solid, lightweight, and contains high corrosion resistance ability.

You might have been experienced tank failure as early as 6 months after you installed them in the vessel. The most common reason is the holes or leaks caused by the rust or deteriorated layer of the material which is used to build your tank. It may be steel. The other factor can be the outer layer of your tank.

If you have aluminum gas tanks coated with specific paints to make for the purpose of turning it to be more corrosion resistant, it can be misleading. The painting is done by the manufacturers to protect it from additional moisture/humidity/oxygen that can cause insignificant rust. While when they use bare aluminum it offers great resistance because of specific oxide. If you have noticed water near your tank then it is not a good sign. The tank should be mounted strategically and there should be adequate space for air to circulate and to dissolve any water.

It’s not always enough to put moisture absorbing agents on the mounting surface as there are still chance that water can be trapped under the deck.  Desiccant fuel tank breathers are very effective solution provides optimal defense against humidity and air-borne particulates from contaminating your aluminum gas tanks.

The other reason for corrosion can be the use of ethanol in the gasoline which has been blending into the gas for a long time now. Boat gas tanks can be risky as USCG describes in its standards. After a few time, ethanol starts to curb the efficiency of the boat engine.

There are other materials like HDPE (a type of plastic) and stainless steel. They are durable and can be cost-effective than aluminum. So if you find holes in your angler, you can order new customized angler gas tanks for your boat.
