Best Dressed Guest: Wedding Attire Dos and Don'ts

Posted by blackhalo on April 18th, 2019

Attending a wedding can be exciting. It's a chance to celebrate not just the love between the couple, but the love among family and friends as well. Weddings are also a chance to reunite with people you haven’t seen in a while or make new friends. And when that happens, of course, you'll want to look your best. Here are the dos and don'ts of wedding attire shopping:

Do Follow the Dress Code

If the wedding invitation has specific instructions for how you should dress, follow them. If it's a black tie dress code, wear one. If it’s a casual dress code, make sure you look nice, but don’t make your goal to steal the show; it isn’t your day. If you don't feel like wearing a dress, and you’re not sure how fancy is too fancy, consider designer jumpsuits.

Important note: If the couple tells you to avoid certain colors, then stay away from those colors at all costs! Most weddings have a color theme, and their request is likely for that reason.

Don't Wear White

You don't want the bride to feel white-hot rage, right? Showing up to a wedding in white has long been considered as a faux pas. Wearing a black dress isn't as big a sin as wearing white, but dark colors should be a last resort. You're celebrating a wedding, so opt for a color that's festive, not somber. Unless, of course, the bride and groom requested otherwise.

Do Check the Location

Unless there's a platform installed, you can't walk on sand in stilettos. Showing up at a luxury hotel in a casual dress isn't ideal, either. When choosing what to wear, it's important to consider the location. You'll want to select something appropriate for the venue. Ask people you know about the location or look it up online. If it's an outdoor wedding, you might want to bring insect repellent or a handheld fan.

Don't Ignore the Weatherman

When attending a wedding AL fresco, heed the weatherman's advice. If it's going to be warm, choose light, breathable fabrics over heavy, rich fabrics. Bring a fan and a handkerchief, too. Cooler weather calls for soft mishmash and elegant cocktail coats. Closed shoes might be a better option over open-toed ones. You don't want your toes to fall off, right?

Do Choose Comfort

Comfort is always a priority. The ceremony could take a while, and it'll be followed by plenty of dancing after. Make sure that your outfit allows you to move freely without fear of tearing. If you'll be wearing a new pair of shoes, it would be better to break them in first. This helps lessen your chances of developing blisters.

What are you waiting for? Go look for dresses, designer jumpsuits, and accessories now.
