How to prevent a home burglary?

A burglary takes place about every eighteen seconds in the United States. That adds up to nearly 200 per hour, and approximately 4,800 every day. There is no need to be alarmed by these statistics, but it is a good idea to educate yourself about what you can do in order to prevent a burglary from happening to you. Here some facts and tips, courtesy of Locksmith Phoenix:

Unlike the past, when burglars used to break windows, most break-ins today occur silently, after the burglar managed to make a copy of your home key. There are numerous ways in which a burglar could gain access to your keys, even for a few seconds, and make a mould of them, out of which a matching key can be created.

There is no need for advanced technology in order to copy your keys. Did you leave your keys for a moment on the counter at the gym? Didn’t pay attention to your keys while loading your groceries at the store? A burglar could be right there to take advantage and make a copy.

Like many problems in life, the best solution is prevention. A reliable and honest locksmith will tell you that no door is impenetrable, but you can certainly make it very hard, causing a potential burglar to move on to an easier job:

Cylinder- the most important part of the lock is the cylinder, the mechanic part that locks the door using pins, springs or dents. When having a new lock installed, make sure that you are getting a new cylinder, in its original packaging, and not one that was taken off an old door.

Having an additional top lock will also make a burglar think twice before trying to break-in your door.

In addition, there are other measures that can improve your security- visible security cameras can be very detering and hidden security cameras that are connected to a security company dispatch can have a security team sent to your house to catch a burglar red handed. Another option is biometric security measures, using fingerprints to operate. Biometric locks have advantages and disadvantages. It is a good solution for parents who are worried that their children will lose their keys or have them stolen from them. The key is always at your fingertips so it can ever be lost or copied.

The disadvantages are that each lock can only be set to a limited number of fingerprints, so if you want your neighbor to water your plants while you’re away on vacation, they won’t be able to enter. A biometric lock is less suited for the elderly, because their fingerprints are less distinct, preventing the lock from functioning properly. Another issues is price- biometric locks are more expensive than regular locks.

Most importantly- keeping your home safe is also a matter of being responsible. All the technology won’t help you if you don’t take these basic precautions. “I’ve encountered break-ins where the owners just went out for a few minutes to the store without locking the door” says Locksmith Phoenix. “Just shutting the door behind you is not enough” Make sure you lock the door whenever you leave the house, and keep all the windows shut when going out to work or for a long period of time.
