If you're looking to hire an organizational management consulting expert, there are certain criteria you want to make sure they possess. If you're hiring a consulting company, you want to verify that who they send you possesses the same characteristics, commitment, expertise, and knowledge. Here is a brief summary of the skill set and subsequent behavior you should insist upon.

Experience and Success

You want your consultant to have a history of success and you want that success to be in a situation somewhat similar to your situation. For example, if you are a small business owner, a consultant whose only experience is working with mega-companies probably is not a great fit. Likewise, if you are a program manager with 50 reports in a division in a huge company, you do not want someone who's only experience, successful or not, is working with companies with less than five employees.

The success you want to see is in a situation or environment similar to your situation and/or environment.

They Have Done Their Homework

Undoubtedly, any new consultant will have a lot to learn about your operation. That said, you want them to know the basics about your company, the market you work in and the industry you are in as a whole. That means they have researched your company and know summaries of your corporate, legal, personnel, financial, economic, marketing and sales status, at the very least. The fact they have learned this information should be evident in your first meeting. If they are completely ignorant of who your company is and what it does, you may want to consider looking at another consultant.

They Know the Competition

Much like you want them to know who you are, it is vital they understand who your competition is. The reason for this is that you want them to be able to do a comparison, recognize areas you could improve and then be able to make recommendations based on their knowledge that will help you gain an edge. This is especially true if you're employing an organizational consultant whose job is to pinpoint ways you can streamline processes or your organizational structure to attain a market advantage.

They are Personable

Their job is to figure out how to improve your business. That said, you want them to get along with you and your employees. Making sure you have hired someone who has superb interpersonal skills is key to you selling them to your team and your team listening to what they have to say.

These are the basics you should insist upon when looking at hiring an expert in organizational management consulting. If you stipulate your consultant possess these characteristics, you will give your business the greatest chance of reaping the most out of the person you hire.
