ACI stands for Application Centric Infrastructure. Cisco announced the release of this infrastructure in April 2013. It acts as a premier software-defined networking solution in the data centre. Cisco ACI needs the following three hardware:

1. Leaf

2. Spine

3. Cisco APIC

All the leafs are combined to the spines. Leafs are never cabled to each other and same ways the spines are not attached to one another. There is always a connection established between a spine and a leaf.

In ACI, the overlay protocol is known as VXLAN and the underlay protocol is called IS-IS. These protocols do not require any configuration and they operate as a team. The network engineering is fully automated.

DNA stands for digital network architecture and DNA is the latest management solution by Cisco. While ACI is for the data centre, DNA is implemented for Wan and campus devices. DNA is based on the intuitive workflows and it is also a declarative model. This results in the reduction of time for provision of network devices. DNA helps in troubleshooting, it helps to solve the problem, much before it arises. DNA also increases the security and visibility of the devices.

The SD-Access or the software defined access is built on the main principles of Cisco DNA and they are operated from a controller. The main aim behind developing this was to create better connectivity. However, when all the devices can connect with each other, the security is reduced.
